Taters opens in Marsh Supply lot
WEIRTON – Taters Sandwiches and Fresh-Cut Fries opened Monday at its location in the parking lot of Marsh Pipe and Supply, 3070 Pennsylvania Ave.
The new food cart is a true family affair with lifelong Weirton natives Jeremy and Christine Tate at the helm. Their 8-year-old son Jaden has been helping out, and according to his father, Jaden has been the one earning most of the tips so far.
The Tates’ 2-year-old, Ryan, has a few years to go before he joins in on the business.
The Tates met in the food business in 1997 when they both worked at the former Red Bull Inn in Weirton. Jeremy’s background in the amusement industry gave them the inspiration to become their own bosses and pursue their own means of selling “great food at reasonable prices.”
Nearly everything on Taters menu is $6 or under.
They specialize in sloppy joes, beer-battered fish, fresh-cut fries and deep fried Twinkies, and there will be weekly specials featured throughout the season.
“We’ve been doing really good so far. It’s been a great reception, and we’ve nearly sold out of food just about every day this week,” Jeremy said. “Even when it’s been raining, we’ve still had a crowd.”
Taters hopes to stay open through November, depending on weather.
The Tates plan to participate in local community days celebrations and festivals in the region throughout the summer in addition to the regular hours.
Taters is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed Sundays and Mondays.
“It’s been a journey. It’s a 24-hour job. If I’m not here, then I’m running for supplies. But I’m enjoying it,” Jeremy said. “We’d like to thank everyone in Weirton for supporting us and giving us such a good reception and first week. We’d also like to thank Fred Marsh. I can’t thank him enough for letting us use this perfect location.”
