EARNS STATE SPOT: Jefferson County Joint Vocational School student Rachel Mazar has been named among the top three finishers in the first Ohio SkillsUSA commercial baking contest.
Mazar, a junior from the Indian Creek School District, was among eight students from across Ohio to compete. She spent six hours completing six recipes at Columbus Community College and her creations were judged by professional chefs. She will return to Columbus for an awards ceremony on Wednesday to learn whether she finished first, second or third.
The event entailed making a homemade bread, pineapple pie, blueberry muffins, cream puffs and sugar cookies and Mazar was also judged on her cake-decorating skills. Mazar has spent her weekends since February completing an internship at the Touch of Elegance Bakery and Cafe in Wintersville.
The first-place finisher will advance to the national SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, Ky.
Meanwhile, culinary classmate Caitlyn Chevalier will put her skills to the test in a different category when the Buckeye Local High School junior participates in Monday’s restaurant service competition at an Ohio SkillsUSA event at the Downtown Columbus Convention Center. She will showcase her abilities as a hostess and server and on table service.
