Shopping local pays

Karen Dobzynski of Steubenville, right, was the grand prize winner of the 2017 Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce “Buy Local” receipt drawing. Part of the chamber’s “Shift Your Shopping” campaign, the promotion encouraged local spending by allowing shoppers to log their receipts from purchases made between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25 and receive one entry per $50 spent into a drawing for $500 cash. Presenting the check is Tricia Maple-Damewood, chamber president. Nearly $3,000 in local shopping receipts were submitted during the two-month contest. Other “Shift Your Shopping” events and programs included Small Business Saturday stations throughout the county that offered coffee, doughnuts, reusable tote bags and coupons from local businesses; a scrolling gift list on the chamber website; “Shop Small” buttons and door decals; and “Eat, Drink & Be Local” T-shirts that were worn by local business owners and their employees. Hauser’s Furniture and Manfred’s Restaurant & Banquet Room were the sponsors for the 2017 campaign. – Contributed
