Auxiliary to ship Valentines to troops
WEIRTON – The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary held its monthly meeting Jan. 14 at the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliers Way with President Joan Spano presiding over the business session.
Marcy Spano, in Chaplain Mary Ann Smith’s absence, gave the devotions and read “God Calls Us to a Life of Faith.”
Maxine Ragan led members in prayer, with special prayers for Marge Irvin, Rose Barbara, JoAnn Johns, Mary Ann Elliott, Dan Lyons, Don Smith, Augie Ragan, Jake Killen, Gertie Hanlin, Joshua Sponaugle, Rob LaPosta and Joan Spano.
Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance; Vice President Darlene Kemp called roll; Maxine Ragan gave the treasurer’s report; and Recording Secretary Carol Lyons read the December meeting minutes, which were approved as read.
Lyons read the correspondence, including letters from Barboursville Veterans Home Administrator Stacy Brown thanking Joan Spano for gifts sent to residents for the holidays; and Matthew Merola thanking the group for Christmas stockings sent to active duty troops in Afghanistan.
The club also received cards from Don and Kay Toothman, Henry Portocarrero, Tom and Pam Stiles, John White, Tom and Joan Powers, Gunnery Sgt. Shannon Weir, Ralph and Mary Wheaton, Bill and Mary Mossor, Ruth Coates and Marine Club Chaplain the Rev. Ronald Rice.
Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott sent get-well cards to Joan Spano, Don Smith and Charlene Horstemeyer. She thanked those attending for the cards she received in December. Joan Spano reminded members to send a card to their secret pal in January. Members extended January birthday wishes to Marcy Spano.
Joan Spano gave the auxiliary’s adopted veteran Daniel Lyons lottery tickets as a New Year gift. She sent seven birthday cards and 20 calendars to veterans home residents. She also sent a Christmas cards to Marines stationed at Parris Island.
The auxiliary will purchase a wreath for Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
The group will be sending Valentines and healthy snacks to active duty troops and Tri-State area veterans in February.
The auxiliary made donations to the veterans home and the Tri-State Young Marines.
Members were reminded dues must be submitted immediately.
Carol Mack won the 50/50 drawing.
The next auxiliary meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11, and it is a brown bag meal.
