Volunteers needed for MLK celebration
Planning for the sixth-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Youth and Children Program celebration is under way with volunteers needed to help with various duties.
The program will be held Jan. 19 at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center located at 905 Market St., Steubenville, with setup at 9:30 a.m. and registration getting under way at 10:30 a.m.
The schedule includes:
— 11 a.m.: Welcome and introduction, Duane Jennings and Carol Ann Simmons.
— 11:15 a.m.: Plaque presentation for honorees Pastor Everett Mitchell and Pastor Sam Williams.
— 11:30 a.m.: Franciscan University literacy program: Martin Luther King Jr. super civil rights leader.
— 11:45 a.m.: MLK Children’s Choir under the direction of Delores Wiggins, minister of music.
— 12:30 p.m.: Free lunch.
— 1 p.m.: Guest speaker Davina Ware of Columbus of Mattie Mae Foundation “Our Youth” leading participants in “a high-energy fun and serious dramatic presentation.”
— 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Disc jockey Bill Harvey.
The event is open to boys and girls age 3 to 16 “for a day of excellent age-appropriate learning activities that will allow your child to learn about Martin Luther King’s legacy.”
To register a child for the free event, contact the City of Steubenville Parks and Recreation Department at (740) 283-6000, ext. 4000, Monday through Saturday.
The event is a joint effort of Eastern Gateway Community College, the MLK Association, the City of Steubenville and Franciscan University of Steubenville. Volunteers to help with the event are needed to decorate the center, set up tables and chairs, register children, serve food, clean up, and assist as tutors and chaperones.
