Auxiliary collecting for troops

WEIRTON – The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary held their monthly meeting Monday at Serbian American Cultural Center located on Colliers Way.

President Joan Spano welcomed two new members, Vicki Parr of Weirton, wife of Tri-State Marine Corps Club member John Parr; and Carolyn Mirabella of Follansbee, wife of member Samuel Mirabella. Joan Spano called the meeting to order and presided over the business session. Chaplain Mary Ann Smith led devotions, read “Love is Universal Language,” offered the invocation and including special prayers for Jake and Jerry Killen, Ed Hanlin, Gertie Hanlin, Rob LaPosta, Josh Sponaugle, Eugene Kaminski, Tina Spano, Dan Lyons, Don Smith, August Ragan, Josi D’Ulissa, Susan Kurchina.

Marcy Spano led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance; Vice President Darlene Kemp called roll; and Recording Secretary Carol Lyons read the January meeting minutes, which were approved as read. Lyons also read a thank-you letter from the Barboursville Veterans Home for five birthday cards and 11 calendars sent to the home in January.

Maxine Ragan gave the treasurer’s report. Mary Ann Elliott gave the sunshine report. She sent get-well cards to club members Dan Lyons and Don Smith and a sympathy cards to Commandant Edgile and Dee Covey.

Joan Spano reminded everyone to get a gift for their secret pal, and the membership was thanked for remitting their dues on time.

Joan Spano sent five birthday cards and four calendars to veterans in February. Shannon Sweeney, stationed in North Carolina, called and thanked the club members for Christmas and Valentine’s Day cards sent to her. Joan Spano gave the members hand cream and lip balm for Valentine’s Day.

The auxiliary sent 125 Valentines to active duty troops and 350 Valentines to Tri-State Area veterans.

The group is now collecting healthy snacks for active duty troops for April care packages. The group is accepting donations. Those wanting to donate snacks or money toward the purchase of snacks can contact Joan Spano at (304) 748-3107.

The next meeting will be March 11.
