Essay contest part of Black History Month celebration

The Franciscan University of Steubenville, the Martin Luther King Association, Eastern Gateway Community College and Historic Fort Steuben are joining forces with LaBelle Neighbors Who Care to expand their program and the organization’s annual awareness of the Black History Month celebration.

The program will feature an essay for students in grades one through 12. The topics include:

“What interesting and positive facts have you learned about Africa?” and

“What information have you learned about your heritage that has inspired you and may help your future?”

Students who would like a detailed breakdown of the rules on the contest can call (740) 346-9925. Each student who submits an essay will automatically qualify for a $10 gift certificate that will be given out at Historic Fort Steuben on Feb. 16, and the top essay winners in the three divisions – grades one through four; five through eight; and nine through 12 – will each be awarded $100.

Each school in the Steubenville City Schools has entry forms for the contest, however, the contest is open to all children in the area.

In addition to using the drop boxes in each school, essay submissions can be mailed to: LaBelle Neighbors Who Care, P.O. Box 301, Steubenville, OH 43952. Entries must be postmarked no later than Feb. 11.

The prizes will be awarded at Historic Fort Steuben, 120 S. Third St., Steubenville, on Feb. 16. Essay winners and those claiming the $10 submission award must claim them during the program at Historic Fort Steuben.

In addition to the essay contest, the event also will feature a film festival, African cuisine, displays, a featured speaker and related activities.

Program sponsor representatives and committee members are Anita Jackson, from Franciscan and the MLK Association; Angela Kirtdoll-Suggs of Eastern Gateway Community College and the MLK Association; Asantewa Anyabwile, president of LaBelle Neighbors Who Care and program coordinator; and Sharon Kirtdoll, treasurer of the MLK Association.
