WHEELING – The Ohio County Public Library has announced upcoming Lunch With Books programs.

They include:

noon Tuesday, “Jackie Robinson.” Actor Greg Kenney will portray Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball. Kenney is National Baseball Hall of Fame Education Advisory Board member. The program is part of the library’s Black History Month observance.

noon Feb. 26, “Wheeling Street Names.” Researcher Kat Quinn will discuss the origin of street names like Chapline, Jacob, Eoff and McColloch.

noon March 5, “Potomac.” Richard Owens, author and West Liberty University history professor, will discuss his novel, “Potomac: A Story of America,” following a series of murders and assassination attempt on the president against the backdrop of World War II-era politics and diplomacy. The book is available at the campus bookstore.

noon March 12, “Sea Queen of Connacht.” Karen Vuranch portrays Grace O’Malley, a 16th-century Irish clan chieftain, warrior and pirate. O’Malley was called Granuaile, the “Sea Queen of Connacht” and the “Pirate Queen,” and was the Queen of Umaill, an Irish territory adjacent to Clew Bay. She famously met with Queen Elizabeth I of England to discuss ceasing her support of Irish rebellion in return for the release of several of her relatives.

noon March 19, “Letters of a Civil War Hospital Steward.” Alan West will discuss his book, based on 230 letters from Daniel McKinley Martin, who traveled from Pittsburgh to Wheeling to enlist in the Second Virginia Regiment, later known as the fifth West Virginia Cavalry, and became a hospital steward, to his wife. In his letters, he mentioned several prominent Wheeling residents.

noon March 26, “Women in the Civil War.” Betsy Estilow of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine will discussion the women who contributed to both the Union and Confederate war efforts during the Civil War. The program is part of the library’s observance of Women’s History Month.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch, and free beverages are served. Call (304) 232-0244 for information.
