Senior Services lists programs
NEW CUMBERLAND – Hancock County Senior Services is offering the Group Lifestyle Balance diabetes prevention program for those who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, beginning March 20 at the Hancock County Senior Services facility located at 647 Gas Valley Road.
The program includes a six-month core program, including 12 weekly, one bi-weekly and three monthly sessions, which provides education and tools for individuals to reach healthy lifestyle goals. The program is designed for those 18 and older who are overweight and pre-diabetic or have metabolic syndrome. The conditions increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The program’s goals are to help participants lose 7 percent of their weight through healthy eating and encourage them to do 150 minutes of brisk physical activity each week. Those participating will self-monitor their weight and learn more about healthy eating, physical activity, problem-solving and self-motivation.
Following the core program, participants will continue with monthly post core maintenance sessions for support and guidance.
Three staff members have been certified in the program, which is conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Prevention and Control Center.

In other senior services news, the Seniors Helping Senior program received the 2013 Program of Excellence Award in the leadership, civic engagement and community development category from the National Institute of Senior Centers. Hancock County was chosen from more than 100 entries from across the country.
Seniors Helping Seniors provides basic home repair and maintenance services. A group of retired volunteers, trained and certified through West Virginia Northern Community College, make basic home repairs, and those using the service are only charged for materials.
The volunteers include Arliss Mink, Ralph Metts, Russ Flannigan, Jim Trojak, Bernie Sanders, Jim Craft, Sam Tate and Dick Adams.
Executive Director Mark Knabenshue will accept the award on behalf of senior services in October.
The Sunny Day Respite Center, which will provide care for individuals with dementia during the day to allow their caregivers to attend to other matters, will open soon. Senior services also offers home- and community-based care for those who need assistance with day-to-day care of disabled or senior family members. The organization is gauging interest in forming a “Shutter Bugs” camera club this spring, and some suggestions include photo scavenger hunts, photo contests and “shot of the month.” Those interested should call (304) 564-3801.
Senior services has scheduled a variety of upcoming events and activities.
10 a.m. Mondays, Wellness group. Each week includes a confidential weigh-in, group discussions, education, group exercise and warm-ups and cool-downs. Beginning March 1, senior services will distribute “Fitness Funds” to anyone participating in an exercise, health awareness or wellness program at the center. The “Fitness Funds” may be used to purchase water bottles, lanyards and draw-string backpacks. For information, call (304) 564-3801.
10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Everybody’s Fitness. Becky Anderson leads an Arthritis Foundation-certified exercise program to relieve stiffness, decrease pain and improve balance. Low-impact exercise includes range of motion, strength and balance drills and cardio routines. The class is free to seniors and the disabled. The cost is $3 for all others.
1 p.m. Tuesday, book club. Residents are welcome to meet in the day room and discuss the previous month’s read.
5:30 p.m.Tuesdays and Thursdays, Zumba. Debbie Teter instructs the fitness class, which is for those 18 and up. The cost is $5 for those 18 to 60 and $3 for those 60 and older.
9 a.m. Wednesday, Breakfast for Billiards. The event will include breakfast and pool.
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, Bingo.
6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, Tae Bo fitness classes. Certified instructor Susan Clibbens will be teachings. To register, call (304) 564-3801.

10 a.m. Fridays, Tai Chi program. The joint-safe exercise program reduces pain and stiffness and improves flexibility and muscle strength. The Arthritis Foundation-approved program uses “Sun-Style” Tai Chi routines. The class is free to seniors and the disabled. The cost is $3 for all others.
4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 28, spaghetti dinner fundraisers. Dinners will include spaghetti and salad. Meals will be delivered to Hancock House, Westminister, Alicia Arms, Peachtree Inn, Freedom Place I and II and Overbrook Towers between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Order forms can be obtained from the respective housing representatives. Orders must be placed by 4 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 20 and be pre-paid. Take-out orders will be available. If Hancock County Schools has a two-hour delay, the event will be canceled.
1 p.m. March 18, spring painting class. Sue Tate will lead a four-week class on painting at 1 p.m. Mondays. The $25 participation fee includes all materials. The class must have at least five participants. To register, call (304) 564-3801.
March 21, Life Line Screening. Life Line uses sonogram to see plague build-up in arteries. Pre-registration is required. Call (800) 324-1851.
The senior center hosts a daily soup and salad bar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The cost is $3 for both soup and salad or $2 for either. Extra soup or salad is $1. Five meal tickets are $12, and 10 are $24.
