Open house Sunday at Martha Manor

The board of directors, staff and residents of Martha Manor are rolling out the welcome mat with an open invitation to drop by during its open house set for Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

An assisted living and adult day care facility, Martha Manor is located at 408 N. Fifth St., and has been in existence for more than 100 years.

“This is the time of the year when we would like to share with our friends a tour of our facility and allow our guests the opportunity to learn about this nonprofit facility,” said Ruth Snyder, longtime administrator.

Everyone is welcome to attend to mingle with residents, take a tour of the two-story building that can accommodate 22 residents and enjoy refreshments, Snyder said.

Martha Manor is a nonprofit, private-pay facility that doesn’t contract with Medicare or Medicaid although Medicare will pay for physiotherapy and occupational therapy, home health care and hospice care, according to Snyder.

Martha Manor has 22 private rooms – three with private baths. While it is not a skilled care facility, medications are administered and residents are helped with activities of daily living.

It offers three home-cooked meals a day, 24-hour general nursing care, housekeeping service, linen and personal laundry service and professional haircare in addition to a varied activities program. Residents who are able can come and go as they like, according to promotional material.

It also welcomes short-term residents in addition to day care services.

Its beginnings date back to 1895-96, so the history information goes, when the need for a home for aged women became apparent. It led to meetings, a committee, advertisements and a response: 11 women wanted to enter such a home. A mix of contributions and bequests combined as a foundation of funds to bring the dream to fruition 20-plus years later.

The facility recently was awarded a grant from the Mary Jane Brooks Charitable Trust, according to Snyder.

“Through the efforts of R. Peterson Chalfant, David D’Anniballe and Ned George, the manor will be making many improvements that will enhance the overall daily living of our residents,” Snyder said.

“We are very grateful for these programs and the individuals who give of their time and efforts.”

Phyllis Foreman is president of the Martha Manor Board.

Other officers are Sandy Burruss, treasurer; Nancy Lewis, recording secretary; and CarolynLee Barrett, corresponding secretary. Other board members are Mike Florak, Iris Craig, Rena Bolger, Margaret Metcalf, Eleanor Naylor, Noreen Peterson, Ruth Eddy and Mary Ann Whalen.
