State winners announced
WEIRTON – Seven local students won first place in the state level awards in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas education contest.
Those St. Paul School pupils winning awards at the state level were as follows: Gabrielle Mazzone, Division I essay; James Mazzone, Division II essay; Megan Guida, Division II photography; and Jacob Schubert, Division II poetry.
Those Madonna High School students winning awards at the state level were as follows: Alisandra Welch, Division III art; Gina Granato, Division III poetry; and Serra Alongi, Division III essay.
The winners were announced during the 46th Biennial Convention of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas April 12-14 at the Blessed John XXIII Pastoral Center in Charleston. Education Chair and Financial Secretary Eleanor Davis of Court Bishop McDonnell accepted the awards on the students’ behalf from State Education Chair Mary Ann Renzelli. Other Bishop McDonnell members attending included Regent Marge Trinone and Treasurer Dorothy Skrab.
The entries were submitted to the National Education Committee for judging. National level winners will be announced during the national convention in July.
