Weirton Woman’s Club meets
WEIRTON – Diane Pastoric, Weirton Woman’s Club president, presided over the March meeting and held a moment of silence for former members who died in March.
Jeanne Amidon, program chair, introduced Dr. Carol Slomski, a board-certified surgeon specializing in breast surgery. Slomski focuses on diseases of the breast, including malignant and benign tumors and breast cancer risk assessment and prevention. She spoke about the importance of annual breast exams and noted the risk of breast cancer depends on a woman’s age, family history, whether she has had children and general health, including weight. Slomski added tomosynthesis, the latest method for performing high-resolution limited-angle tomography at mammographic dose levels is available the Weirton Medical Center.
Dragana Lazic from Yugoslavia spoke on her life in the United States and her interest in cooking. She prepared and served an appetizer, Pimento Cubes. Lazic sponsors a cooking class at 6 p.m. every third Monday at the Schiappa Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
Jo-Ellen Wright, General Federation of Women’s Clubs of West Virginia Northern District president, gave her keynote address.
Diana Durst, state project chair, is accepting donations for Camp Kno-Koma, the West Virginia diabetes camp. A sponsor is matching $1 donations, and those donating $5 are entered into a $50 gift card drawing.
Homelife Chair Sandy Robbins acknowledged Diane Pastoric, Midge Green, Diana Durst, Carla Glover, Ida Haynes, Sally Frantz, Helen Gibson and Cathy Cooper for working the blood analysis at the Weirton Medical Center in March.
The Literary Department will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at Undo’s, with the program “Remember When: A Walk Down Memory Lane.” The Art Department meeting is scheduled for noon April 22 at Undo’s with Sue Ann Barrett giving a presentation, “God’s Given Talents.”
The Literary Department will hold its annual Book Review Luncheon April 20 at the Williams Country Club. Nancy Ellen Rice O’Leary will review “Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child” by Bob Spitz. Tickets are $25. To purchase a ticket, call Sandy Robbins at (304) 723-4668.
The GFWC-WV Northern District Spring Leadership Workshop will be held April 27 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in New Cumberland.
The club will next meet May 4 at Williams Country Club.
