Court represented at conference

CHARLESTON – West Virginia Regent Cathy Sims presided over the 46 biennial Catholic Daughters of the Americas convention held April 12-14 at the Blessed John XXIII Pastoral Center.

Court St. Anne of Montgomery was the hostess court; past National Regent Joanne Tomassi was the keynote speaker; and the theme was “Fruit of the Spirit.”

Regent Marge Trinone, Treasurer Dorothy Skrab and Financial Secretary Eleanor Davis of Weirton’s Court Bishop McDonnell attended.

Tomassi reviewed the organization’s by-laws, charities, ministries, increasing membership and retention, state chair reports, legislation, education, projects and church-related issues. A members’ website is now available at

Assisted by Past State Regent Jackie Smith, Tomassi also installed the newly elected state officers, including Regent Carol Bogacz, First Vice Regent Karen Butts, Second Vice Regent Cathy Sims, Secretary Susan Gaston and Treasurer Marilyn Bean. She urged the local courts to support the state officers and the national calendar project, which raises funds to refurbish the national office. Tomassi also displayed the updated recruitment forms.

The conference was opened with a memorial service for deceased members led by the Rev. John Rice and committee appointments, followed by a social.

Bogacz presented a video outlining West Virginia Catholic Charities’ programs, area centers, services and needs. Members agreed to support “Mary’s Meals,” an organization that feeds hungry African and Indian children and requested the organization be added to the Catholic Daughters’ national charities.

Sims displayed new banners and signs that will be available for court events.

Closing ceremonies included Sunday Mass.

Court Clarksburg, assisted by Court Bishop McDonnell, will be the 2015 convention hostesses.
