Pupils read more than 3 million words in a week to exceed challenge

Right To Read Week held May 13-17 at Hills Elementary School in Mingo Junction gave pupils in grades pre-school through fifth grade a chance to prove what they could accomplish when challenged by their teachers to read 2 million words during the week.

Committee leaders Melissa Brown, Mary Louise Morgan and Amy Rusnak along with Principal Cecelia Fritz used the Accelerated Reader Program’s word count report to calculate total words read per day and promised a popsicle treat if the goal was met by the week’s end.

“The students surprised themselves and everyone involved when the final count tallied more than 3 million words by Friday afternoon,” organizers said.
