AARP tea party to benefit three causes

WELLSBURG – The Brooke Area AARP Chapter will borrow from the elegance and charm of the past to give to three local causes when it hosts a Victorian tea party July 27 to benefit the Brooke County Public Library, Brooke County Museum and Cultural Center and Holy Family Catholic Mission food pantry.

It’s the second year for the event, which last year raised $2,000 for the library and drew 200 guests of all ages for an afternoon of tea, light refreshments and fun.

Nancy Patterson, the group’s president, said the fun this year will include a silent auction, with a variety of items donated by local businesses up for bid, and music by The Donohues.

Guests are invited to bring their favorite tea cup and saucer and dress in Victorian style, with gowns, hat, gloves and if they have them, parasols.

The decorative umbrellas of a bygone era will be used to decorate the hall.

“But they don’t have to dress in period clothing. They can come and enjoy everyone else’s costumes,” said Patterson.

Men are welcome also, and male AARP members will be on hand to serve as hosts and will be dressed for the occasion.

The tea party will begin at 2 p.m. at the Wellsburg Moose Lodge. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance at the Brooke County Public Library or by calling (304) 737-3411.
