East Springfield church plans seventh-annual Care Festival for Aug. 3

The United Methodist Church of the Cross off state Route 43 in East Springfield will host its seventh-annual community Care Festival on Aug. 3 with a variety of activities for all ages.

A rummage sale gets under way at 10 a.m. with a chicken barbecue starting at noon.

The menu will include a half chicken dinner for $7.50 to include half a chicken barbecued over a charcoal flame and served with baked beans, cole slaw, cake and a drink. The one-fourth chicken for $4.50 features the same sides along with the choice of white or dark meat.

The menu at the shelter house will include hamburgers for $2; hot dogs for $1; and nachos and cheese for $2.

There will be a bake sale, cake walk, lemonade stand, a mini-carnival featuring games for children, and live music, including bluegrass favorites Awesome Possum, recording artist Rudy Hawk and the Wrights.

There will be a car cruise-in from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; demonstrations by the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department; a silent auction that ends at 6 p.m.; and a live auction beginning at 5 p.m. and featuring a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe with a 5.7-liter V8 and several custom touches.

A “Never Too Busy” Dave Barnhouse print also will be among auction items.

The 2012 Care Festival raised more than $5,000. Proceeds from the festival have been donated to East Springfield VFD, Unionport VFD and Donna’s Angels and have provided assistance for various other needs in the community.
