Healthy Kid’s Fair set for Saturday

A Healthy Kid’s Fair – a first-time event being organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County in partnership with the YWCA of Steubenville and with Comcast as the main sponsor – is planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It will be held at the YWCA at 320 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, and is free to the public with attendance geared to youth and their parents.

In addition to there not being admission, a free lunch also will be offered.

Nutrition programming, exercise basics, mental wellness, free giveaways, educational materials, vendors and cooking nutritionally are all part of this Saturday package, according to Phyllis Riccadonna, fundraiser/public relations coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County.

The agenda for the event will include the following:

Starting at 10 a.m., clinical psychologist Daniel Pinciaro will talk to the children and their parents about mental wellness. “He will explain EFT, which is an emotional version of acupuncture, except there are no needles. He will talk on breathing exercises to improve concentration and focus on issues,” Riccadonna said.

At 11 a.m., Jamie Mayle, a certified dietary manager from the Laurels of Steubenville, will speak on nutrition, nutritional food choices and how to prepare better nutritional meals.

From noon to 1 p.m., a luncheon prepared by the staff of the YWCA and provided by the YWCA will be served. Marlyn Neely is the YWCA’s executive director.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Tiffany Dobson, a personal trainer from the YMCA Wellness Center at St. John Arena, will speak on physical exercise and healthy options for a better life.

Prizes donated from the YWCA, the Laurels and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County for the children will be awarded, according to Riccaddona, who said the event also will include a time of testimony from a Big and Little from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

“A ‘Little’ will be there to play his trumpet made possible by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County program,” Riccadonna said.
