Locals attend annual congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter Regent Nancy Valles and member Mary Wood recently attended the DAR’s 122nd Continental Congress, the membership’s annual meeting.

While at Congress, they attended business sessions, committee meetings and social functions. They also attended the DAR Schools Supper and Ohio Light of Freedom Tea.

Guest speakers included Leigh Keno of “Antiques Roadshow,” who received the Historic Preservation Recognition Award, and Rich Little, comedian and voiceover actor, who received the Americanism Award, given to a distinguished naturalized citizen.

On National Defense Night, honoring the nation’s military, Navy Vice Admiral Robin R. Braun gave the keynote address, and retired Army Lt. Gen. Claude “Mick” Kicklighter spoke about the Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration.

Awards were presented to the Army Nurse of the Year and outstanding volunteers for veterans.

Also, Ambassador John Limbert received the Medal of Honor at the Gala Awards Banquet. Actress Connie Stevens received the Founders Medal for Patriotism, and the films “Honor Flight” and “Girl Rising” received Media Awards. During the week, the DAR also honored the Outstanding Teacher of American History and the American history essay contest winners.
