Fair to include baked goods contest
WELLSBURG – The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service will hold a baked goods contest during the Brooke County Fair, which will be held Sept. 6-8 at Brooke Hills Park.
Cakes, pies, cookies or fudge may be entered. No items requiring refrigeration will be accepted, and no baked goods can be returned.
Entries will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the 4-H tent at the fair, with judging to be done by the public from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day. Ribbons will be awarded to the winners.
There is a $3 entry fee,with proceeds going to the Brooke County 4-H program. Entry forms may be picked up at the extension office at 840 Charles St. or online at www.brooke.ext.wvu.edu.

Entries sought for baby contest
WELLSBURG – The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service will hold a cutest baby contest during the Brooke County Fair.
There will be two age categories: under 12 months and 12 to 24 months, and children must not have reached their first birthday by Sept. 1 for the first category or second birthday by that date for the second category.
Participants must enter a large coffee can bearing a photo and name of the child no later than 8 p.m. Sept. 6, the first day of the fair. The can should have a lid with a slot for fairgoers to cast 25-cent votes and may be brought to the extension office at 840 Charles St. Sept. 5 or to the 4-H tent on the fairgrounds at Brooke Hills Park no later than 8 p.m. Sept. 6.
Fairgoers may cast one vote for a quarter or multiple votes for $1 or more. Trophies will be presented to the two winners at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 on the fairgrounds, but winners need not be present.
There is a $3 entry fee for participants, and proceeds from the votes go to the Brooke County 4-H program.

Contestants sought for fair pageant
WELLSBURG – Girls and boys, for some age categories, are sought for the Brooke County Fair Queen of Queens Pageant to be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at the fair.
The fair will be held Sept. 6-8 at Brooke Hills Park.

Catholic conference to be held
WEIRTON – The 2013 Catholic Identity Conference will be held Sept. 20-22 at the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliery Way.
“Life, Liberty and Libertas: The Keys to Catholic Restoration” is the theme for the event, which will include lectures and seminars by several speakers, daily traditional Latin Masses and food.

Biographic film to be shown
WELLSBURG – The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-13-rated film “42,” the story of baseball great Jackie Robinson, at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Crocheting group to meet
WELLSBURG – The Brooke County Public Library’s Crocheting Group will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The group is for adults of all crocheting levels, from beginners through experts. Bring your own supplies and projects. If you need help, someone will be available to assist or instruct you.

Farmers markets continue
The Brooke County Farmers Markets are continuing from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Wednesday, with a variety of locally grown produce, baked goods and crafts for sale.
The markets are held on alternating weeks in front of the Unity Apartments on state Route 2 at the north end of Wellsburg and Ray Stoaks Plaza by the Follansbee Municipal Building, also on Route 2.
The next market will be held Wednesday in Follansbee, and the following one, on Aug. 28, will be held in Wellsburg.
A farmers market also will be held in Bethany from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 31.
