Labor Day food

at Unionport

The Community Center in Unionport will have a breakfast on Labor Day Monday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed up with an ice cream social from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The event is in celebration of the last holiday of the summer.

Proceeds will benefit community center expenses. The museum will be open.

Saddle Club’s final

show is Sunday

The Steubenville Saddle Club’s final show of the 2013 season will be held Sunday at the club grounds located on state Route 152 north just outside Richmond.

Classes will get under way at 9 a.m.

The club’s next meeting will be held at the club grounds at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Membership in the club is open to anyone at any time. An annual membership for a family is $25; $15 for an individual; and $10 for a youth.

For 2013 memberships, checks can be made payable to the Steubenville Saddle Club and mailed to SCC, P.O. Box 431, Richmond, OH 43944. Meetings normally are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the club grounds.

The club is in its 66th year.

Barbara McCoy collected $15.52 in July in the penny jar for the senior center.

Stumptown Steam

event approaches

The Stumptown Steam Threshers Reunion & Show will be held Sept. 7-8 on the club grounds located 1 mile west of New Athens, Ohio, on state Route 519 between state Route 9 and US 22.

The Stumptown Steam Threshers Club officially was formed more than 40 years ago, but the event has been held for close to 50 years. The club was formed as an organization dedicated to preserve, restore and display antique farm and power equipment.

Each year the event features live steam equipment to power such equipment. Demonstrations include lumber being cut from logs, grains being separates from the stalks of straws which is then bailed by a hand-fed and hand-tied bailer. Shingles are cut, and fresh cornmeal is ground.

Many displays give festival-goers a glimpse of farm life before the turn of the 20th century. A church service is held on Sunday morning.

A large flea market and food also are part of the event.

Admission is $3 for adults with children under age 12 accompanied by an adult admitted for free.

Joseph Tope to mark 90th birthday

An open house in celebration of Joseph Tope’s upcoming 90th birthday will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hopedale Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall in Hopedale.

The son of the late Wilbur and Agnes Tope, Tope was born Sept. 8, 1923.

He is a resident of Bloomingdale and was a carpenter of more than 60 years with Carpenter’s Local Union No. 186 before his retirement.

He and his wife, the late Patty Couch Tope, have three children: Randy of Texas, Tamy Yarnell of Tennessee and Marsh of Jewett.

Tope enjoys visiting friends and relatives, going out to eat and playing the lottery and slots.

‘Band Benefit for Washington’ Friday

The Buckeye Local High School Band Boosters are organizing a “Band Benefit for Washington” classic car cruise-in for Friday to help raise money to send the band to perform in the 2014 National Veterans Memorial Day parade in Washington, D.C., set for May 26.

The BLHS Band was nominated by U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta, to represent Ohio in the event.

The boosters are having the classic car cruise in addition to other fundraisers to help make the trip a reality.

The classic car cruise Friday will be held from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at South Elementary in Tiltonsville. The first 50 cars will receive dash plaques. The cost is $3 to register. All cars and bikes are welcome.

The event will include music by disc jockey Spike Man, food, drinks, snacks and a 50-50 drawing in addition to other drawings.

“We have a goal of $67,000 (for travel and lodging) and approximately 110 band members to send. We are very excited about this. It’s an honor,” said Tammy Capalingo, vice president of the BLHS Band Boosters.

Bill Stevens is the director of the band that was notified in April of its nomination to represent Ohio in the parade. The four-day trip takes on an educational tone as the contingent will get to see the sights of the nation’s Capitol and to lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery as part of the Military Wreath Laying Ceremony.

The YWCA of Steubenville’s international luncheon and program, an event that celebrates the work of the World YWCA, will be held at noon on Sept. 5.

Country Friends

Country Friends will host Art Beal and the Country Tradition band on Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 402 Old Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

Country Friends has events each Monday, Friday and Saturday at the hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. each Saturday, and the dance starts at 7 p.m.

Benefit in Scio

The Scio United Methodist Church, 117 Maple Ave., Scio, will host a benefit fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 for Aaryn McAfee, 13, a student at Harrison Central Junior High School. It will involve a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and 50/50 drawing.

McAfee was born prematurely in 2000, weighing only 2.2 pounds. He has a variety of health issues, including being blind, grand maul seizures, hydrocephilitious, septo-optic dysplasia, cerebral palsey, mental retardation, retina opothy of prematurity and autism. He was diagnosed with seizures on Easter 2007, which have caused brain damage over the years.

“The family is now having financial issues with some of his medical costs and mostly modifications to his home,” according to information submitted.

“The family is in need of modifications such as handrails, a front porch with handicap ramps (railings), bedroom renovations and bathroom redo.”

Donations also are being accepted through US Bank in Hopedale in care of Aaryn McAfee.

The Pam Shoemaker “Paying It Forward” Breast Cancer Foundation in partnership with Women In Action Against Cancer Coalition is gearing up for its third-annual golf classic to be held Sept. 8 at Spring Hills Golf Course in East Springfield.

Shotgun start is 9:30 a.m. for the four-man scramble with a $260 cost per team with hole sponsorships and team participation being sought.

A men’s breakfast at NorthSide Community Church located at 702 Orchard Grove Ave., East Liverpool, welcomes all area men to “Join Jesus’ Winning Team Today.”

Toronto North River Avenue Christian Church held its annual picnic at Stratton with minister Luke Hightshue welcoming more than 90 church members and guests.

The event included games, food and fellowship.

Lola Swanagan was chairman of the event.

Jen Kisner, daughter of Paul and Crissie Cunningham, traveled the farthest, coming from Alaska.

Church adopts park-and-go policy

Grace Lutheran Church located at 2105 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, has adopted a park-and-go policy for individuals using the church’s lot while attending Steubenville Big Red and Catholic Central football games at nearby Harding Stadium.

“Loitering, partying, gaming and alcohol” are prohibited, according to posted flyers.

Parking donations will continue to benefit mission projects the church supports.

Christian concert at Grace Point

Grace Point Ministries located at 4244 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, will host a Christian concert performed by JJ Heller on Aug. 31 beginning at 7 p.m.

Heller is a Phoenix-based singer-songwriter, wife and mother, according to her Facebook page. A church flyer promoting the concert notes, “Let’s start some healing in the Ohio Valley with a Christian concert performed by JJ Heller.”

On the flyer, Heller is quoted: “I feel called to be honest about what’s going on in my life – to talk and sing about the struggles that I face so that my listeners realize that they are not alone. For some reason, Christians, including myself, sometimes think ‘If I’m following the Lord and doing the best I can, that life will be easy,’ and it’s not. Annual corn festival scheduled today

The seventh-annual corn festival will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at Christ United Methodist Church located at 3598 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton Heights.

Retirees of TIMET in Toronto have two gatherings on the calendar – occasions to chat, reminisce and stay connected.

Back-to-school event in Amsterdam

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 232 in Amsterdam wrapped up their summer season with a brief business meeting after the annual covered- dish meal at the post home.

Upcoming projects include a back-to-school dance for children to be held Aug. 23 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the VFW with disc jockey Rockin’ Rodney.

There will be a steak dinner at the post home on Sept. 7. The menu will include steak, potato, salad and dessert. Cost is $12 per person.

There will be a horseshoe tournament on Sept. 8 with details to come.

Knights schedule first degree

The Knights of Columbus Council No. 472 has scheduled a first degree for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the council hall on Two Ridges Road, Wintersville.

Candidates for the first degree are to be there between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. All members are asked to attend the degree and welcome the new brother knights.

The degree is open to anyone wanting to become a knight in the Steubenville-Wintersville, Toronto and Mingo areas.

July camera club winners listed

The Upper Ohio Valley Camera Club has named the winners of the July competition in prints and slides.

The print winners for the topic of the month “Bubbles” were Barb Momyer, first place; Lisa Carte, second place; and Ernest D’Andrea, third place. In the open category, the winners included Carte, first place; Chris Horvath, second place; and D’Andrea, third place. The special effects winners were Debra Snider, first place; Connie Koniski, second place; and Stephen Mihopulos, third place. The slide winners for the topic “Bubbles” were Dave Rees, first place, and Claudia Norris second place. The open category winners included Rees, first place; Steve Whiting, second place; and Norris, third place. The special effects winners were Norris, first place; Rees, second place; and Whiting, third place.

The July competition concludes the 10-month competition season which began October 2012. The number of points accumulated will be tallied for each member, and the top three in prints and slides will be named the “Photographers of the Year” at the annual fall banquet.

The July workshop meeting was a presentation on mat cutting by Sam Rees and Whiting. Rees gave a demonstration, using special tools to cut a straight edge, beveled edge and make an oval shape. He showed club members how to calculate measurements for the opening size. Rees showed the club “Basic Mat Cutting” by Vivian Kistler.

Whiting demonstrated mat cutting using a T-square metal ruler, rotary cutting mat board and bladed tools. Whiting placed self-healing, heavy rubber cutting surface under the mat board. Cutting surfaces come in different sizes and can be used repeatedly without leaving blade grooves in the material.

Diane Bannister displayed matted pictures, including octagonal, curved edges, domed and fancy shapes used to enhance pictures. The shapes are available at frame shops that use a computerized system to cut mats.

The annual camera club picnic was held July 21 at the home of Lisa and Troy Carte in Steubenville.

On Aug. 6, club members met at Faith Ranch in Jewett for the second time in an outing arranged by Angela McClain. Members photographed horses, peacocks, farm animals, sunsets and the night sky. Members also held a hot dog roast.

Tri-State Marine Corps Auxiliary meets

The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary held their monthly meeting Aug. 12 at the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton.

President Joan Spano presided at the business session. Maxine Ragan gave the invocation, and Marcy Spano gave the devotions, reading “Name Above All Names.”

Secretary Carol Lyons gave a report and read a thank-you from the West Virginia Veterans Home in Barboursville for sending seven birthday cards in July.

Treasurer Maxine Ragan gave the financial report. Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott reported on cards sent. Historian Marcy Spano passed pictures out to the members.

Shirley Brecht won the 50/50 drawing and donated it back to the club. Joan Spano sent seven birthday cards to Barboursville for August birthdays.

The auxiliary picnic was canceled, and the group will have dinner out at 5 p.m. Sept. 7 instead.

Carolyn Lyons and Leroy Bee served refreshments. Mary Ann Smith and Mary Arlia will serve at the September meeting.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 9.

Kroger reunion for 1970s retirees

Retirees head to Amish country

Nineteen Steubenville City School retirees gathered for a home-cooked, family-style meal in the gazebo of Schrock’s Farm in Sugarcreek on Aug. 8.

The outing included the Schrock family singing after the meal and fielding questions about the Amish way of life. There was a discussion about how involved Amish parents are with young people to entertain and keep them involved in the Amish life. Huge groups gather for suppers, softball and volleyball games throughout the summer, they explained, and they assemble in smaller groups during the winter because of a lack of large spaces to accommodate larger groups.

Upcoming lunches for the retirees will include one at Abdalla’s in September, the Dove in October and at Steubenville High School in November. Any retiree is welcome to attend.

Elks Lodge to hold pasta dinner

The Weirton Elks Lodge 1801 will hold its monthly pasta dinner for members and guests from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The dinner includes salad, pasta, bread, butter, dessert and coffee or tea. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children age 10 and under. A ticket will be selected for a free dinner at next month’s pasta Sunday.

Gardening honors set for Burges

A garden tour and covered dish dinner at the home of Darwin and Linda Burge was the setting for the July meeting of the Dillonvale Rosebud Garden Club. All present answered roll call by naming a garden tool.

Burge gave a reading on “My New Year’s Garden.”

President Gloria Bartyzell congratulated the Burges on being named Outstanding Amateur Gardeners by the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. They will be honored at the 83rd-annual Ohio Association of Garden Clubs convention to be held Aug. 26 at the Maumee State Park Lodge in Oregon, Ohio. The club also will receive a superior award for its program booklet.

A slate of officers was approved for the October election naming Caroline Williams, president; Kim Campbell, vice president; and Linda Kovach, secretary.

The evening program was building and selecting plants for a winter garden. Nina Cleaver gave members handouts on plants that are visually intriguing and functional for water gardens along with steps to build a pond or garden. Darwin Burge gave members a tour of his garden, which includes five water features, then described the materials and plants used in those areas.

The Jefferson County Fair Flower Show will be held Saturday and Sunday. Members discussed entry requirements and and will be notified of set-up times.

Annual car show, fun day Sunday

Ohio Valley Home Health Services Inc. will host its fourth-annual car show and family fun day on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Liverpool location at 15679 state Route 170 in East Liverpool.

Registration for the car cruise will be from 9:30 a.m. until noon. The cost is $5. The first 75 cars will receive a free dash plaque, and there will be trophies awarded in 15 categories.

In addition to the car cruise, there will be a live disc jockey, games and prizes for the children, drawings and 50-50 drawings, a bake sale and a concession stand.

In addition, OVHHS will offer a free blood pressure clinic, and there will be local ambulances for children to tour and explore. Admission to the event is free to the community.

“We (OVHHS) feel very blessed to have such great support from area businesses for the fundraisers and community event that we host. Every event that we have helps us help others, in need of in-home care, with no means to pay. All proceeds from the event will assist in the funding of in-home charity care to the residents in the Ohio Valley. OVHHS serves Columbiana, Jefferson, Brooke and Hancock counties and recently opened a branch office in Steubenville.

Adena Lions Club

plans for picnic

The Adena Lions Club is making plans for the annual Adena Lions Club picnic to be held at Bedway Park on Wednesday.

Darrin Young will be the cook for the event, which was discussed when the business meeting was held at the Adena Lions Club room.

Officers were installed at a previous meeting with Lloyd Hutchison named president; John Lengyel, first vice president; Laura Konkoleski, second vice president; Karl Bowers, third vice president; Nancy Walker, secretary; Shirley Bednarski, treasurer; John Sebring, tail twister; Alva Kinney, assistant tail twister; Ray Konkoleski, Bob Luyster, Don Moore and Jean Shields, one-year directors; Randy Bednarski, Drew Case, R.J. Konkoleski and Martin McKim, two-year directors; John Parkinson, sightsaving; Jay Hopkins, membership chairman; and Young, immediate past president.

Members will be collecting clothes for a community project. This will start Sept. 1 and end the first meeting in October.

Hutchison presided at the meeting.

The July dinner meeting was held at the Willow Restaurant, with Bednarski in charge of arrangements.

Ron Malin reported a talk with Mary Birkhimer, Jefferson County board of elections district director, who said money was received from the state to put in two handicap parking places by the Lions club room, which is used for elections.

Matching funds of $250 are needed to complete this, which members approved paying.

Saturday event

in Scio detailed

The Conotton Creek Trail benefit bicycle show and swap meet will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in Scio.

The event will be held on the trail beside the covered bridge in Scio and is held in conjunction with the fall festival car show.

There will be a prize for the people’s choice winner and for second-place runner-up. Donations put in contestants’ canisters will be counted as votes with the monies being donated to the trail.

There is no fee to show a bike or to sell or trade biking gear. T-shirts and caps will be for sale.

The event is sponsored by the Scio branch of PNC Bank.

The Four Seasons Senior Citizens met July 17 at the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton with President Norma Yoho presiding.

Following the opening prayer, members enjoyed a picnic buffet.

After dinner, members and guests played bingo, corn hole and cards.

Kristen Butkus and Maria Grico were guests of Jeanette LaRosa.

July birthdays were acknowledged.

Lester Fridley won the free dinner with Kristen Butkus and Jane Barney winning the 50-50 drawing.

Door prizes were won by Virginia Roseberry, Barb Cerra, Bev DiBaise, Gene Matey and Rose Mark.

Murder-mystery dinner scheduled

The Weirton Woman’s Club, a Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs of West Virginia member organization, is organizing a murder mystery dinner fundraiser Oct. 5 at the Serbian American Cultural Center.

Mystery Theatre Unlimited will present “The Calamityville Horror,” an interactive musical comedy starring Bert Furioli, Butch Maxwell, Michael Moran, Shannan Noe and Ryan Sears.

Crew House open house Sunday

The Crew House Museum on Main Street operated by the Richmond Community Historical Society will continue its summer open house series from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Tom and Barb Grimm will serve as hosts.

Visitors can tour the facility that features a variety of Richmond memorabilia and check out the Jefferson Union room of school items, including yearbooks, uniforms and trophies.

President Cookie Veltri presided at the July Three Score Seniors meeting where Tony LaRosa gave the invocation and benediction.

Rosemary Gaynor introduced the evening’s entertainer – Chuck Lucas, who played guitar and sang. We Three will be the August entertainment.

Reports were given by Secretary Pat Delekta; Membership Chair Nancy Smurda, who introduced new member Kathy McCarrick; and Reservation Chair Vivian Weigel, who said 101 members and three guests were in attendance, including Rita Mitchell, Roberta Barnett and Kathy Jones.

Sunshine Chair Winnie Kemp reported on cards sent and acknowledged birthdays and anniversaries.

One-day VBS at Colliers church

The Colliers Way Church of Christ will hold a one-day vacation Bible school on Saturday at the church located at 612 Colliers Way, Weirton, across from Weirton Medical Center.

Registration and light breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m.

The theme is “Hayday – Growing in Friendship with Jesus,” and there will be classes for infants through adults. There will be stories, crafts, games and snacks, and the day will conclude with a family picnic from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the church grounds.

Final show of season Sunday

The Sundowners 4-H Saddle Club has sponsored a series of open horse shows this summer with the last show of the season set for Sunday at 4-H Camp Aura located on Ross Road, New Cumberland.

The show begins at 10 a.m. with five 10 years-and-under classes, including walk-trot, thread the needle, egg and spoon, cloverleaf barrels and leadline. All 10-and-under classes will be awarded a first-place trophy and ribbons to five places.

At noon, open performance classes begin, including thread the needle, down and back, straight barrels, pole bending, cloverleaf barrels and stakebend. The classes are broken into age divisions of 12 and under, 13-17 and 18 and over.

All classes with eight or more entries will have cash payback. There also are three added money classes which include $50 added barrels, $50 added poles and $25 added stakebend. Champion and reserve will be awarded for all three age categories at the conclusion of the show. Contestants must have signed up to be considered for champion and reserve awards.

A concession stand is available on the grounds. In the event of extreme inclement, call (304) 564-3747 after 8 p.m. the night before the show to check for possible show cancellation.

St. Paul’s having Sunday brunch

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 717 Adams St., Steubenville, will host a brunch on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mended Hearts to meet Monday

The Greater Wheeling Area Chapter 3280 of the Mended Hearts Inc. will meet Monday at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in conference room B where the annual heart survivors picnic will be held and all heart survivors will be acknowledged.

All area heart survivors are invited to attend along with family, friends, neighbors or anyone with an interest. The menu will include salad, grilled chicken breast, oven roasted red skinned potatoes, green beans and angel food cake with strawberries. The meal cost is $9.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Raymond Hunerman, whose topic will be “Sinusplasty.”
