Numerous awards presented at regional garden clubs event

Numerous awards were presented when the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs Region 12 held its fall regional meeting Oct. 19 at Starkdale Presbyterian Church in Steubenville.

Regional Director Jodi Russell presided at the meeting attended by Geri Rae, Ohio State OAGC second vice president and Region 12 adviser.

Awarded for program books were:

— Dillonvale Rosebuds received a superior 100 points.

— Flushing received a superior 100 points.

— Four Seasons received a superior 100 points.

— Mount Pleasant received a superior 99 points.

— Woodlawn received a superior 100 points.

Awarded for publicity books was:

— Mount Pleasant received a superior 90 points.

Darwin Burge of Dillonvale Rosebuds was presented the 2013 Outstanding Regional Amateur Gardener Award and given a present from the state president. Russell also recognized Joyce Butts of Flushing Garden Club for 2012 Outstanding Regional Amateur Gardener.

Rae installed Region 12 officers, including Russell as regional director; regional secretary Judy Workley (by stand in) and regional treasurer Gloria Bartzel.

The morning program was Wahkeena “Past, Present and Future” with Robyn Wright-Strauss presenting an educational look at Wahkeena Nature Preserve.

Following lunch served by Starkdale Presbyterian, pumpkins were judged and prizes awarded. The afternoon program involved tole painting barn slates and river stones.
