While visiting my son, Brad, in Parma, Ohio, (he’s a Weir High grad), I had my first opportunity to watch the movie, “Super 8,” filmed in Weirton. It was a fun movie, in terms of identifying neighborhoods where parts of the movie were filmed. Dennis Jones, president of the Weirton Museum, did an outstanding job of talking about the filming, as well as the history of the city. Toward the end of the movie, I spotted the “James Locke Jewelers” neon sign which came from East Liverpool, Ohio. It was a Steven Spielberg movie – he’s one of my all-time heroes in view of his production, “Saving Private Ryan,” my choice of the best film in history.

A new newspaper plant was built on Lee Avenue, downtown. Eventually The Weirton Daily Times moved its offices to the Herald-Star in Steubenville.
