Bethany women hold meeting

BETHANY – The Bethany Woman’s Club, a General Federation of Women’s Clubs of West Virginia member club, met Oct. 21 at Bethany Memorial Church, with President Helen Moren presiding.

The program was presented by Mort Gamble, who shared his expertise about P.T. Barnum and the circus in America. Gamble is assistant to Bethany College President Scott Miller.

Following the reading of a prayer written by the late Robert Myers, reports were heard from Judy Pyle, treasurer, and on the Northern District Style Show and Northern District Convention held in Moundsville Oct. 12. Moren reported on the “Connections” program organized by Patrick Sutherland, a Bethany College professor.

Members are taking orders for Uncle Al’s Pecans and sewing and filling Christmas stockings for Boatsie’s Boxes.

Halloween favors were distributed to Ann’s Country Retreat and Valley Haven nursing homes.

Hats and scarves will be donated to the Metal Bridge project for the homeless and Wheeling Soup Kitchen.

The club is participating in a UNICEF drive, and nine families were each given a basket for “Make a Difference Day.”

The club will be collecting socks at its November meeting for donation to the Young Women’s Christian Association in recognition of Domestic Violence Month.

Moren was endorsed as a candidate for GFWC-WV second vice president.

There were guests from the Woman’s Club of New Cumberland, including Dorothy Hawkes, the group’s president and Northern District first vice president; Alice Mitchell, Northern District parliamentarian; and Joanne Hobbs; as well as Cindy Hoffman.

Beverly and Charlotte Chambers served refreshments.
