Mini-Grecian Food Fest set for Friday

If you didn’t get enough of the four-day annual Greek Food Festival in June organized by the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Steubenville and the ongoing monthly sale of gyros by the church’s Philoptochos Society isn’t enough to sustain you, take heart.

Friday is your Greek food catch-up day.

The church located at 300 S. Fourth St. is deep into preparations for its Mini-Grecian Food Fest that will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with patrons able to dine in or get carryout.

While the menu won’t be as extensive as what’s offered during the summertime festival, it’ll still be a palette-pleasing opportunity, according to John Scavdis, church treasurer.

Quantity-wise, the one-day festival constitutes about one-fourth of the food being prepared, and while lamb is not on the menu, something new is: Souvlaki over rice – roast pork shiskabobs.

The mini-fest was held about three or four years ago and is being revived, driven by requests.

Scavdis said the end of the summer festival traditionally generates requests from patrons for more, according to Scavdis.

“People say we should do it twice a year,” he said, noting a compromise is the one-day mini-fest with proceeds to go toward the church’s roof project.

The menu includes roasted chicken, rice and beans; baked fish, rice and beans; souvlaki over rice; pastitsio (Greek version of macaroni and cheese); gyro; soft drinks and bottled water; a la carte roasted chicken, souvlaki, baked fish, green beans, rice pilaf, dolmathes (grape leaves) and spanakopita (spinach pie).

Desserts available are baklava; galatobouriko (custard filo); koulourakia (twist cookies); kourambiedes (powdered sugar cookies); and rice pudding.

Orders can be faxed to (740) 282-2091. Patrons are asked to allow at least 30 minutes to complete an order. “Your order will be ready for your convenience in the ‘carryout area'” with reserved carryout parking spaces in the rear of the church.

Businesses are encouraged to consolidate orders onto one form. Credit cards are accepted.
