Tri-State Auxiliary meets

WEIRTON – The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary held their monthly meeting Nov. 11 at the Serbian American Cultural Center located on Colliers Way.

President Joan Spano called the meeting to order and presided over the business session. Chaplain Mary Ann Smith gave the invocation and read from Philippians 4:6-7. Smith also offered special prayer for Linda Elliott, Dora Ferrelli, Rose Mary Dawson, Carol Lyons, Joan Spano, Danny Lyons, Gertie Hanlin, Jean Hanlin and Maria Tasey. Marcy Spano gave the devotion, reading “The Veteran” and leading a thanksgiving prayer.

Secretary Carol Lyons read the October meeting minutes, which were approved as read, and a letter from the Barboursville Veterans Home, thanking the group for November birthday cards. Joan Spano sent six cards to the home. Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott sent get-well cards to Scott Dawson, George Ragan, Mary Arlia, Joan Spano, Pam Stiles and Madison Ingram and sympathy cards to Mary Ann Smith and Danny and Carol Lyons.

Nominating Committee Chair Shirley Brecht gave a report on officer nominees for 2014-2015.

The group will hold their Christmas party at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at Undo’s. Members are asked to bring a gender-neutral door prize worth $15 to the party.

Darlene and Wayne Kemp are leading a Toys for Tots drive, and members are asked to bring toys in on Dec. 9.

The Marine Corps Club Christmas party will be held after the Dec. 9 meeting, those auxiliary members attending are asked to bring a covered dish. The club will supply meats.

Peg Dawson won the 50/50 drawing and donated it back to the treasurer.

Members were asked to remember their “secret pal” at the December meeting.

Historian Marcy Spano passed out photographs of the club’s Marines Ball and Veterans Day ceremonies. Leroy Bee placed the auxiliary’s wreath, and Jim Jurosko placed the Marines club’s wreath.

The auxiliary will announce the 2014 adopted veteran at the Dec. 6 Christmas party.

Those members who contributed Christmas cards for active duty military and veterans in area nursing homes were recognized. They include: Joan Spano, 122 cards; Shirley Brecht, 115; Tina Spano, 122; Maxine Ragan, 71; Mary Ann Smith, 60; Barbara Spinella, 49; and Linda Elliott, 30. Tina Spano prepared 90 birthday cards.

The group assembled 26 Christmas stockings for Boatsie’s Boxes. The auxiliary also donated funds and facilitated the donation of a case of toothpaste from Dr. Vincent Placek to the organization. Those contributing to the effort included Wesbanco employees, Barbara Spinella and Judy Hucik of Florida.

Elizabeth Shipe and Joan Spano served refreshments.

The next meeting will be held Dec. 9.
