Triumph CWC has Christmas dinner

The Triumph of the Cross Catholic Women’s Club recently held its annual Christmas dinner at Froehlich’s Classic Corner Restaurant, welcoming as guests Bishop Jeffrey Montforton; the Rev. Thomas Nau, pastor of Triumph of the Cross Parish; the Rev. Bradley Greer; and the Rev. Bartholemew Ogumelu.

Entertainment was provided by the Anunciation, a group of students from Franciscan University of Steubenville who also are members of the university’s choir. Their selections included a mix of religious songs and modern tunes with a finale that included a sing-along of popular Christmas carols.

First Coordinator Terri Fernandes thanked the Christmas dinner committee comprised of Mickie Sellaroli, Nancy Schreck, Mary Ann Bushlow, Patricia Aruda and Dorothy McDonough.

A special thank-you was extended to Donna Kaine, who made all the Christmas centerpieces.

Terri and Pat Aruda distributed packets of wheat seeds to everyone with Terri explaining the custom of “Christmas wheat is given to friends to provide an opportunity to experience the joyful waiting of Advent.” The seeds are planted on Dec. 13, the Feast of St. Lucy, and watered daily. By Christmas Eve, the wheat will be 6 to 8 inches high and then can be cut and placed in a Christmas manger, or the entire container, with the growing wheat, can then be placed next to a manger scene.

The CWC’s next regular meeting will be held in March.

The Sveta Petka Kolo of the Holy Ressurection Serbian Orthodox Church in Steubenville held its December meeting at Eat’n Park in Steubenville, discussing the Christmas party and voting to give the church a Christmas donation.

The group’s monthly receiving a donation is the International Orthodox Christian Charities.

The organization will hold a bake sale following church on Dec. 22 and will have a drawing for “a basket of cheer” following the Jan. 7 Christmas Eve service.

The next meeting will be held Feb. 6.

Nazarene church distribution

date changed to Wednesday

Because of Christmas, the Steubenville Church of the Nazarene will carry out its “compassionate ministry program” a week early.

In recent months, the church located at 511 Woodlawn Road, Steubenville, has been distributing items that can’t be purchased with food stamps to families who have need.

While this is normally done on the fourth Wednesday, because that is Christmas, the Rev. Ron Miller said the distribution will instead be held on Dec. 18 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Proper identification is required.

Starting in January, the regular distribution will resume.

Christmas organ, holiday music concert in Mingo

Area native Paul Moore, a 50-year veteran of the keyboards, will be the featured artist at an organ holiday concert offered free to the public at the First United Presbyterian Church of Mingo Junction on Sunday beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The concert also will include spiritual and Christmas music by the church’s choir and a special appearance by Mike and Shelby Styer.

“We’re offering a well-rounded evening of uplifting and spiritually-compelling music as an added treat to anyone looking to add live music to their Christmas celebration,” said the church’s choirmaster, Ken Duska.

The organ part of the evening’s program will be Moore playing the church’s new Allen digital computer organ.

Moore began his study on the piano at age 6 and has served and played various churches in the area. He serves as musical director at Brilliant Presbyterian and also is organist at the Mingo church.

“I’ve been blessed with so many supporting and loving people in my years of playing,” said Moore. “I’m pleased and excited to be able to give this concert as a Christmas gift to the people.

The Styers, fresh off the unveiling of their band Broken Arrow’s latest CD, will offer holiday music with a decided folk-Americana style.

“It will be an interesting contrast in styles that night,” continued Duska. “The diversity will enrich your Christmas season. We’ll also take requests at the end and all sing Christmas favorites suggested from the audience.”

There will be cookies and refreshments served after the concert; a free-will offering will be taken with proceeds going to the church’s organ fund.

The church is located at 650 McLister Ave.
