Amateur Radio Club sets classes

WEIRTON – The Steubenville-Weirton Amateur Radio Club will sponsor free amateur radio license classes at the Mary H. Weir Library in Weirton.

The classes will meet at noon on Saturdays beginning Feb. 1.

This class will prepare the students for the Technician Class (entry level) License Exam, with the exam given at the end of the classes.

While the class is free, there are textbooks available for purchase from several sources. There also is free study material available for download online.

The license is good for 10 years and is renewable without taking another exam. The technician class license permits “hams” to use very high frequency and ultra high frequency radios for local communications. These are similar to the radios used by police and fire departments, according to a news release.

“The technician license is the gateway to a lifetime of the worldwide enjoyment of amateur radio,” the newsletter notes. “In addition to using the radios for fun, we also volunteer to provide emergency communications when called on by local agencies.”

Morse Code is no longer required for any amateur radio license. For information, contact Les at (304) 723-1743.
