Celebrity ‘chefs’ part of center event

Fancy, blingy jeans and jewels aren’t the only things happening at the “Jazzy Jeans and Jewels” first-time fundraiser being held Saturday to benefit the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center.

There also promises to be “great food” provided by a number of celebrity chefs, according to Patricia Fletcher and Janet Sharpe, co-chairs of the event that begins at 6 p.m. at Hellenic Hall at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church located at 300 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.

“There’s great food prepared by ‘special chefs’ showing off their culinary skills for the benefit of the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center,” the co-chairs said. “Each chef will be personally serving one of his favorite meals to tempt your tastebuds.”

The event will feature a variety of foods and desserts provided and served by the celebrity “chefs” who will include Dr. John Hyland, Dr. Pervaiz Rahman, Dr. Pat Macedonia, Mayor Domenick Mucci, Keith Murdock, Joe Ighnat, James Baber, LeRoy Sharpe, Mary Lynch of the YWCA, Judy Manfred, Jonathan Littlejohn, Dr. Tom Brown, Todd Phillipson, Indian Creek Schools Superintendent John Rocci, the Rev. Nathan Malavolti, Rob Rendulic, Bob Villamagna, the Rev. Clint Quillen and Matt Parise of Mama G’s.

Patrons are invited to “kick on, slide on or squeeze into your jazziest jeans” for the event that also will feature a “jazzy jean” contest in which the winner gets a “Red Carpet package” makeover courtesy of Legal Hair and Day Spa in Steubenville.

There will be a contest judging the “jazzy favorites.” By 7 p.m., a panel of judges will select five or six people from the audience who are wearing what they consider to be the “jazziest” outfit, according to Sharpe. They’ll be given a name tag, and a jar with their name on it will allow everyone in attendance to vote for their favorite outfit. The “cost” is $1 per vote.

“We will select them (the candidates) at 7 p.m. or so and let them parade around a while,” Sharpe said of what’s “the biggest part of the fundraiser that night.”

The winner who has collected the most money gets the “red carpet package” makeover from Legal Hair and Day Spa in Steubenville.

While patrons can sample a variety of foods and vote for their favorite outfit, they also can enjoy a cash bar and music and dancing to disc jockey Ross Ivkovich, organizers said.

The goal is to raise $5,000, according to Fletcher and Sharpe, who explained that the health center board members have been individually challenged this year to organize other fundraisers in addition to the key event, which is the annual gala to be held April 27 at St. Florian Hall.

All proceeds from Saturday’s event will benefit the center, which come spring hopes to open a dental clinic.

Tickets are $30 per person or $50 per couple and are available by contacting Sharpe at (740) 632-1144; at the health center located at 701 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, where the phone number is (740) 283-2856; or from any committee member. Tickets also will be available at the door.

“Come join all the fun and enjoy area celebrities in their special chef hats serving good food, then stay around to vote for your favorite jazzy jean contestant and dance to one of the area’s favorite DJs,” the co-chairs said.
