Children’s Dyslexia Center plans fundraiser for Feb. 8

The Children’s Dyslexia Center will host the second-annual Purses for a Purpose luncheon and auction at noon Feb. 8 at the Masonic Temple located at 227 N. Fourth St., Steubenville.

Designer bags will be for auction, including Coach, Thirty-One, Vera Bradley and Michael Kors. Several have been designed and handcrafted by local artisans, and others are sports and seasonally themed.

The lunch includes homemade soups and sandwiches, garden salad, dessert and beverage. The event also will include door prizes.

Tickets are $13 for adults and $8 for students.

They can be purchased by contacting the center, by calling (740) 282-4875 or at the door the day of the event.

Gary Cain Realty and Auctioneers will provide auction services. All proceeds benefit the dyslexia center with the event helping it bridge a budget deficit and continue to offer services to the Tri-State Area, according to center Director Nicole Brown. In order to continue to provide the Orton-Gillingham tutoring services and tutor training, the center faces a budget deficit of nearly $40,000 or more each year, according to Brown.

New chapter books will be just one of the items to be purchased with proceeds from the event. Proceeds also will help fund a new tutor training class scheduled to begin in February.

The center provides reading remediation for those children who learn differently because of dyslexia. The group also provides Orton-Gillingham training for teachers and other qualified people. The tutor-training program is internationally accredited. Pilot training programs also are available to any interested school district, according to Brown. Parents, teachers, school districts and prospective tutors can contact the dyslexia center’s office for information at (740) 282-4875 or by e-mail at masoniclc@sbcglobal.net.
