Ohio Genealogical Society plans open houses for new year
WINTERSVILLE – Plans for open house ceremonies in the new year were among topics covered when the Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society held its December meeting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The new year will include two or more open house ceremonies at the chapter headquarters on Fernwood Road and will be planned in the May/June and August/September time slots. They will be scheduled as day-long Saturday events and will be open to researchers seeking help in locating their ancestors. Membership is not required.
The chapter also will focus on helping those researching the Tri-State Area with special focus on Jefferson County during the slated open houses. Researchers will be available who are experienced to help the beginner or the more advanced researchers. Plans are being made to schedule appointments for one-on-one help throughout the open house times. There will be various research handouts and other help available to all who attend.
The meeting included Flora VerStraten-Merrin, president, and Judy Schmidt, vice president, sharing some of the resources available at the chapter office for researchers to access.
The information was submitted also to Naomi Furbee, newsletter editor, to include in a future newsletter. They will be posted on line as well at www.jeffcochapter.com.
Schmidt shared files from the criminal records, including interesting stories from that time. VerStraten-Merrin reviewed a list of sources available at the chapter office and including the following records: coroners and criminal records, delayed/corrected births recorded, probate files, various declarations/naturalization records and sources.
Executive board members are VerStraten-Merrin, president and office manager; Schmidt, secretary/membership chairman; Furbee, treasurer; and Edward “Buddy” Merrin and Michael Donahue, trustees.
Chairmen for 2014 are: Michelle Vandine, newsletter editor; Tammy Hosenfeld, first and pioneer families chairman; Kitty Kutchmark, publications and query chairman; and Amy Hissom, website manager. Office volunteers are: Frances Roman, Linda Spencer, the Merrins, Lucie and Roger Ewing and Latter Day Saints missionaries/couples.
Joe and Vicky Monson, a missionary couple from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have been volunteering in the office on Tuesdays for the past eight months. They recently completed their missionary service in the Wintersville ward of the LDS church and returned to West Jordan, Utah, on Jan. 13, according to VerStraten-Merrin.
