Saddle Club holds awards banquet

Entering its 67th year, the Steubenville Saddle Club held its annual awards banquet Saturday at the East Springfield Fire Hall where top overall award winners for 2013 were Ben Boyd, high point performance on Aries, and Trese Varney, high point contest, on Babe.

Boyd also took home honors in open driving on Liza and walk trot English in youth 14-18 on Aries.

Varney, again riding Babe, won in adult barrels and adult poles and stakes.

Robin Wedlake, the club’s point secretary, presented them with their awards, which included a personalized belt buckle. Wedlake was assisted by John Carroll.

Also presented awards in various divisions were:

Lane Fomenko, (Mater), lead line;

Logan Fomenko, (Ali), small fry showmanship, small fry horsemanship, small fry pleasure and small fry barrels.

McKenna Carter, (C Diddy), small fry showmanship, small fry pleasure.

Spencer Varney, (Spot) youth 9-13 barrels, and youth 9-13 poles and stakes.

Samantha Glenn, (Cody), youth 9-13 English, youth 9-13 trail.

Heaven Vojvodich, (Fancy Fortune), youth 9-13, gaited horse.

Justin Carroll, (Love Me For Hours), Youth 9-13 showmanship, youth 9-13 pleasure.

Hunter Klinesmith, (There E Is Again), open halter, youth 9-13, walk/trot, youth 9-13 horsemanship.

Kirsten Turner, (Spirit), youth 14-18 barrels, poles and stakes.

John Carroll III, (Watch Me Joe Jack), youth 14-18 showmanship and trail.

Hunter Johnson, (Ultimate Hobby Horse), youth 14-18 pleasure and horsemanship.

Peggy Vojvodich, (Karma), adult gaited horse.

Darlene Chuich, (Zip On Account), adult walk/trot, adult horsemanship and trail.

Ginny Carulli, (Zippos Captain), adult showmanship.

The covered-dish banquet featured a variety of food and plenty of it, leaving no excuses for going home hungry. There also were prizes awarded, and there was a 50-50 drawing won by Darlene Chuich, who went home $75 richer.

Dale Holcomb, taking over the reins as president of the club for 2014, offered welcoming remarks and thanked outgoing officers, including Debbie Grimes, president, for all their work and effort.

Other 2014 officers in addition to Holcomb and Wedlake are: Rodney Moore, vice president; Marlene Lamantia, secretary; Cathy Hickle, treasurer; and Marty Ternasky, show secretary.

The club has set show dates for May 4, June 15, July 13 and Aug. 31 at the club grounds located on state Route 152 north, Richmond.

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the club grounds during good weather. The club’s next meeting, however, will be held Feb. 4 at the East Springfield Community Center’s new building, beginning at 7 p.m. It is located on county Road 39 next to the fire hall.

The club was founded in 1947 and purchased the current club grounds in 1956.

Membership in the club is open to anyone. An annual membership for a family is $25; $15 for an individual; and $10 for a youth. Checks can be made payable to the Steubenville Saddle Club and mailed to SCC, P.O. Box 431, Richmond, OH 43944, or brought to a meeting.
