Local teacher board certified

WEIRTON – Donna Carnes, a Liberty Elementary School third-grade teacher, has achieved National Board Certification through a performance-based, peer-reviewed process in November.

“Every day, teachers go into classrooms with the knowledge, skills and commitment to do work that is arguably the most complex and unpredictable that anyone does anywhere,” said Ronald Thorpe, National Board president and chief executive officer. “In achieving National Board Certification, Mrs. Carnes has not only demonstrated the ability to advance student learning in deep and meaningful ways, she has met the profession’s definition of what it means to be accomplished. That is significant because only those within a profession – the practitioners – can legitimately define the key terms of the profession.

More than 106,000 teachers across the country have achieved board certification, and the National Board and its partners are working to make board certification the expectation for all teachers.

“As our nation’s most accomplished educators, National Board Certified Teachers are well positioned to move our students, workforce and country forward,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Research shows board certified teachers have a significant impact on student achievement and their students out-perform peers in other classrooms.
