Student group works to renovate theatre
WEIRTON – The Weir High School Student Council and advisor Deborah Mahoney are working to raise $15,000 to renovate and restore the Milton J. Weinberg Theatre.
The money raised will go to a variety of the theatre’s needs, including replacing the back curtain, repairing and cleaning the sound board, updating the lighting and refurbishing the stage itself. The student council is in its second of raising funds to renovate the theatre.
The bond levy covered the cost of new chairs and carpeting, but didn’t cover these items. The cost of the new curtain, which must be fire-proof, is $3,000; and it will cost $5,000 to make the necessary repairs to the sound board.
The theatre is utilized for the theatre and dance classes, musicals and plays, band and choir concerts, assemblies and National Honor Society inductions and recitals and productions by theatre groups and dance schools from the community.
The student council is working with other student groups at the high school to leverage support and funds. The Drama Club will be holding a fundraiser in the spring, and details will be announced at a later date.
As part of their effort to raise funds, the student council will hold a celebrity server night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 18 at Undo’s in Weirton. In case of inclement weather, call the school to see if the event will still be held.
The event also will include a gift card and certificate drawing. The student council is accepting donations of cards and certificates from local businesses and individuals. Tickets for the drawing will be $5 and will be available from student council members and at the celebrity server night.
The event also will include a Chinese auction for gift baskets. The student council is accepting donations of baskets or items for baskets from businesses, organizations and individuals. Tickets are one for $1, three for $2 and 10 for $5. They will be available at the celebrity server night.
Student council officers include President Hannah Hinerman, Vice President Bryan Phillips, Secretary Morgan Goff and Treasurer Daniel Morgan.
The student council, in addition to fundraisers, is requesting local business owners, graduated classes and alumni make donations toward the renovation of the theatre. Those making a donation will be recognized on a plaque at the theatre entrance. Sponsorship levels are as follows: $1,000, gold sponsor; $250, silver sponsor; $100, bronze sponsor; $25, patrons; $5, honorable mention.
Donors include the Class of 1949, Class of 1986, Class of 1988, Physical Therapy Associates, Paper, Press Inc., Judy Hamill, Eric Frankovich, Tom Banketas family, Frank LePera, Riopelle family, Camille Pialet, Marie Alimonos Gialamas, Steve and Lisa Petrovich, Jim O’Neil and David Hinerman family.
