Sale to benefit Salvation Army
Riesbeck’s Food Stores will observe National Doughnut Day with a sale Monday through June 8 and June 13, 20 and 27 benefiting the Salvation Army, including its service centers in Brooke and Hancock counties.
The Follansbee, Wintersville and Toronto Riesbeck’s stores and others in the local grocery chain will be selling boxes of nine doughnuts for $3.99 each, with 10 percent of the sales going to the Salvation Army. The doughnuts will be available in glazed, powdered sugared, granulated sugared, cinnamon sugared or in mixed variety packs.
National Doughnut Day originated with the Salvation Army in 1938 in Chicago as a way both to raise funds for its social services during the Great Depression and recognize the “doughnut lassies,” about 250 Salvation Army volunteers who provided doughnuts to American soldiers in France during World War I.
