Burgettstown pupils participate in state contest

CARLISLE, Pa. – Burgettstown Middle School students competed at the 10th annual Pennsylvania Middle School Computer Fair State Competition at Dickinson College.

The regional competition was held in April at Intermediate Unit 1 in Coal Center. Students placing first were eligible to participate in the state competition. There are five competition categories, including animation, computer fair logo, digital movie, graphic design, programming and web page design.

Kieran Walsh, the son of Teresa and Paul Walsh, placed first in programming at the regional competition held at Intermediate Unit 1, before continuing to the state competition, where he placed first in the state. He is an eighth-grader and this is his third year of competition.

Elka Hoelsken, the daughter of Rebecca and R. Paul Hoelsken, and Madison Banaszak, the daughter of Cris and David Banaszak, placed first in graphic design at the regional competition, before going on to compete at the state competition. The pair are eighth-graders and this is their second year of competition.

Sam Berdine, the son of Lynn and Adam Berdine, placed first in web page design at the regional competition, before going on to compete at the state competition. He is a sixth-grader, and this is his first year of competition.

The annual state competition highlights middle school students’ application and knowledge in computer technology-based fields. Students are encouraged to be creative while communicating clearly and improving their knowledge.
