Energy Express takes applications

The Energy Express summer reading and nutrition program begins at June 23 at Weir and Oak Glen middle schools.

It is open to children entering first through sixth grades in the fall and is limited to 88 children.

Energy Express helps children maintain reading skills and good nutrition during the summer months. College students and community residents serving as AmeriCorps members support the program.

“This program ensures that they receive good nutrition and stay involved in fun and educational activities,” Carole Scheerbaum, West Virginia University Extension Service agent. “Energy Express has been shown to help children not only maintain their reading skills during the summer, but often to improve them.”

Energy Express works with volunteers to assist the children during the summer. Volunteers include those youth entering seventh grade and older and adults. Volunteers assist with tasks such as reading, writing, art and drama activities.

Those interested in applying for Energy Express or volunteering can call (304) 564-3805.
