Marine Club auxiliary meets

WEIRTON – The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary met July 13 at the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliers Way.

President Joan Spano called the meeting to order and presided over the business session. Chaplain Mary Ann Smith gave the invocation and devotions; read “God’s Love for You,” by Nancy Sims; and held special prayers for Scott Dawson, Wayne Kemp, Mary Ann Smith, Maxine Ragan, Joan Spano, Carol Mack, Joey Cowher, Gertie Hanlin, Jean Hanlin, Pete Elliott, Danny Lyons and Susan Donahoe.

Secretary Carol Lyons read the minutes from the June meeting, which were approved as read. She also read a thank-you note from Don Toothman, who made a donation to the bakeless bake sale. Treasurer Shirley Brecht read the financial report, which was approved as read.

Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott sent get-well cards to Pete Elliott, Wayne Kemp, Mary Arlia, Marcy Spano, Dan Lyons and Ralph Gaffoli. She also sent cards to Scott Dawson and George Tremblay and a sympathy card to Lola Tremblay. Joan Spano sent 11 July birthday cards to the West Virginia Veterans Home in Barboursville. Regent Nancy Valles of the Fort Steubenville Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution donated 21 T-shirts and mini flashlights, which were given to the veterans by Shirley Brecht.

Historian Marcy Spano passed out pictures.

Brecht reported the auxiliary officers met at the Spano home and voted to allow social members to join the auxiliary. Social members will not have to be related to a Marine Corps Club member, but they will not be allowed to vote or hold office. Social members will be asked to serve as hosts, assist with the annual picnic and Marine Ball and pay the $15 annual dues.

Members acknowledged the July birthdays of Leroy Bee and Jo-Ann Johns.

Shirley Brecht won the 50/50 and donated it back to the treasury.

Brecht asked members to sent get-well cards to Marine Jeremiah Arbogast.

Joan Spano thanked members for their participation in a successful bakeless bake sale.

The annual picnic will be held at noon Aug. 3. Hot dogs will be provided and auxiliary members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert. Leroy Bee will be in charge of the 50/50 drawing.

Club member Ralph Gaffoli visited from Florida.

Mary Ann Smith served refreshments. Jo-Ann Johns and Mary Ann Elliott will serve in August.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11.
