Special Olympians earn medals
WELLSBURG – Brooke County Special Olympians earned numerous medals at the West Virginia Special Olympics Summer Games in Charleston.
Various athletic events were held at Laidley Field and other sites.
In the bocce singles tournament, Marie Kosut earned a gold medal, Heather Ambrose garnered a silver, Lesly Schwertfeger received a bronze and Edward Kosut placed fourth. In the doubles tournament, Edward and Marie Kosut earned gold medals and Ambrose and Schwertfeger earned silver medals.
In track and field run-walks, medals went to the following athletes: Matt Elcesser, gold for the 100 meter, 400 meter and 800 meter; Mike Staats, silver for the 100 meter and 400 meter and gold for the 800 meter; Jeremy Janura, bronze for the 100 meter; and Kay Ferrari, fourth place for the 100 meter and gold for the 400 meter and 800 meter.
David Mendrick received a bronze medal for the softball throw.
In golf, Steve Boley earned a gold medal and placed second overall in his division, while Andrew Rager earned a silver medal and Jimmy Hunter and Danny Adams both received bronze medals.
