County museum opens exhibit

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Hancock County Museum opened its Hometown Teams exhibit Sunday to coincide with the opening of the travelling Smithsonian Hometown Teams exhibit at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center.

Several local museums, local libraries and high schools will have complimentary exhibits while Hometown Teams is on display in Weirton.

The Hancock County Museum will display several photos, articles and items throughout September. Some items include photos of the baseball opening day in 1915 and a 1948 Wells High School baseball team photo, uniforms and bats used by New Cumberland teams early in the 20th century and photos of Chief “Big” Bill Morrison, William Clyde Connell and Gamey Westlake and the Westlake family. Also on display will be the 1952 state champion basketball team photo, basketball score books from 1949-1952 and Rhododendron yearbooks from 1941, 1947 and 1948. Football fans will find photos of the 1941 Wells High football team photo, Wells High scrapbooks and newspaper articles on Wells High teams from the 1950s.

The Hancock County Museum hours will be extended for the exhibit. Hours will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays through September and Aug. 23 and 30.
