Event will eye historic mining, construction equipment

NEW ATHENS, Ohio — The Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association announced the 13th-annual Old Construction and Mining Equipment Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 10- and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park located on Stumptown Road.

Antique trucks and construction and mining equipment will be on display and in operation throughout the weekend. Equipment owned by the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park, park volunteers, Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association members, Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club and other organizations will display or operate draglines, shovels, trucks, crawlers and dozers. The Silver Spade operators cab and bucket are located on the grounds.

Author Kerry George, a former surface and underground miner and retired Mine Safety and Health Administration inspector, will be selling his book, “Black Damp Century.” The novel spans three generations over the course of a century, moving across three states and exploring the history of mining, including violent labor clashes and tragic accidents, through fiction.

Some past historical equipment displays have included a Marion 5561 shovel model, Erie steam shovel model, Volvo articulated truck model, historical mining photos and a Lima factory display including locomotives, cranes, cable hoes, shovels and draglines. Local retired coal miner Bob Flanagan has displayed “Big John,” a statue depicting an underground miner.

The Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club Chapter 22 will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the grounds.

Two Guys and a Grill Southern-Style Barbecue will provide concessions.

All antique trucks, construction, crawler and surface or underground mining equipment are welcome. Machinery, volunteers and equipment operators have came from Western Pennsylvania, Columbus, Dayton/Cincinnati area and northeast and southeast Ohio. Exhibitor camping is available on site.

Photo and history displays also are welcome. Sept. 9 is set-up day for anyone wishing to bring in their antique trucks, crawler and construction and mining equipment before the show.

Admission is $3 per person.

The event will take place at the same time as the 54th-annual Stumptown Steam Threshers reunion and show, which costs $5 per day or $6 all weekend, and also is located on Stumptown Road.

The Stumptown event includes steam traction engines, antique tractors, gas engines, oilfield engines, antique lawn and garden tractors, crawlers, antique cars, antique trucks, a tractor contest, slow engine race, saw-milling, corn meal-grinding, shingle-making, straw-baling, a kiddie pedal tractor pull contest and coin hunt, flea market, entertainment and food.

Antique gas and oil field engines will be in operation. Antique gas engines will be used to power equipment such as pump jacks, butter churns, cream separators and washing machines. Steam traction engines will be in operation. Steam traction engines will power an antique saw mill sawing boards and power an antique threshing machine.

All antique tractors, gas and oil field engines, cars, pickups, lawn and garden tractors, antique farm and agriculture equipment and other antique equipment are welcome.
