Wheeling Kroger store will hold Drug Take Back Day

WHEELING — The Mount DeChantal Road Kroger, in conjunction with the Wheeling Police Department, Cardinal Health and West-Ward Pharmaceuticals, will participate in a Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the store parking lot located at 200 Mount DeChantal Road.

The public may safely discard unused and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

“I’m never surprised by the success of these Drug Take Back events,” Wheeling Police Sgt. Gregg McKenzie said. “As a police officer, with 22 years of experience, I know that the misuse of medications found in home medicine cabinets can often lead to the abuse of illegal street drugs. Events, such as the one this Saturday, are a step in the right direction towards breaking that cycle.”

Uniformed police officers will be collecting pills, sharps, gels and patches in the parking lot of the store, and disposing of them safely in a HIPAA-compliant manner. Kroger pharmacists will be on hand to offer prescription advice and educate customers on the dangers of drug misuse. In April, 63 pounds of medication was collected at a take-back event at the Mount DeChantal Kroger location.
