Fort Steuben DAR holds meeting

STEUBENVILLE — The Fort Steuben Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met Feb. 11 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner.

Regent Karen Blanc called the meeting to order, followed by Chaplain Bonnie Slemmer giving the invocation, Rebecca Hersko leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Second Vice Regent Vickie Joseph leading the American’s Creed and Slemmer leading members in singing the national anthem.

Prospective members Francine Hauldren and Griselda Taylor attended the meeting.

Diane Bowers introduced speakers Russ Jenkins and Michael Smith of Guatemala/World Help. Jenkins has visited a rural Guatemalan village to assist construction. The region lacks infrastructure, including shelter, water, schools and churches. Jenkins, along with other volunteers, have drilled a well, built several homes and a church through donations and a partnership with World Help.

Treasurer Beverly Livingston gave her report.

Good Citizen Chair Nicole Balakos reported nine high schools participated in this year’s competition, with Georgia Beatty of Weir High School winning.

JoAnn Morrison reported that there were 19 local children who won at the state level in the Junior American Citizens competition. They are eligible to attend the Youth Leadership luncheon at the March state conference, and Morrison asked members to make donations toward defraying the $29 lunch cost. Checks may be made out to the Fort Steuben Chapter.

Mary Ann Jesse reported West Virginia is given bonuses to veterans who served in certain overseas locations after October 2001. Veterans who were stationed at Camp LeJeune for 30 days or longer between 1953 and 1987 can get medical coverage if they develop certain disease that may result from a water problem at the base. Ten women veteran artist will be displaying their pieces in veterans hospitals.

Jeanne Vega reported that the deadline for American Heritage competition entries is March 14.

DeeAnn Greene reported the DAR recently held a webinar to help new members learn more about the organization; those interested are encouraged to subscribe to the organizational magazine.

Vickie Joseph and the Calling Committee were thanked for their work.

The state conference will be held March 23-26 and reservations are due March 6.

Nancy Valles proposed the group make fleece lap blankets for patients being treated at the Teramana Cancer Center as a service project. Two yards of 58-inch wide fleece is required for each blanket. Valles will sew blankets if those members who can’t sew buy material.

The state Wings of Eagles Scholarship Committee needs an additional $500 to grant four $1,000 scholarships this year. Members decided to put local scholarships first.

Members were reminded the Schiappa Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has extensive genealogy information available.

Blanc displayed a certificate the chapter received from the Sons of the American Revolution for a donation toward Wreaths Across America.

Members were reminded the April presentation is “Changes in Women’s Fashions, 1750 to 1880,” and asked to remind those not in attendance.

Vickie Joseph asked for prayers for missionary friends in Burundi, and members extended sympathy to the family of deceased member Wilma Boring.

Slemmer gave the benediction.

The next meeting will be held March 11 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner located at 501 Washington St., Steubenville.
