Preschoolers ‘Snuggle Up and Read’

WEIRTON – The Pipinos Center Headstart hosted a “Snuggle Up and Read” activity in teacher Heather Ramsey and assistant teacher Mary Wilt’s pre-kindergarten class Thursday.

Children dressed in pajamas, drank hot chocolate, made bookmarks, sang songs and snuggled up with blankets and books, provided by Hancock County Schools, with some of their favorite adults.

Ramsey explained that reading together helps caregivers and children bond. Babies who spend time with caregivers can focus better and are more likely to read with caregivers when they are toddlers, research shows.

“It encourages early literacy,” Ramsey said, noting that reading together has lasting benefits in education and literacy.

When reading together, caregivers are encouraged to discuss pictures and stories and allow children to re-tell the stories and ask and answer questions.

Reading time is anytime, Ramsey.

“Everyone’s busy, everyone’s on the move, so any time you can fit in reading is a great time,” she said. “Even at the breakfast table, you can read the back of the cereal box.”

Caregivers are encouraged to allow children to chose books, make reading part of the daily routine, follow the child’s lead, be aware of whether or not a child is enjoying themselves and be ready to stop and try again another time if a child is bored or distressed.
