Cultural club celebrates ‘Derby Day’

WINTERSVILLE — The Italian American Cultural Club celebrated “Derby Day” at its May meeting held at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville, which included a women’s hat contest won by Carol Almonte and the “horse race” won by John Balzano and his partner Phillip Pergi.

Michelle Fabbro explained Italian mother’s day, noting “the la Mamma is probably the most important figure in the Italian household, so much so that the Italian men are famous all over the world for being ‘mammoni,’ mamma’s boys.”

Tami Cashioli reported on Campo Italiano which will be held June 19-23. Anyone interested should contact her. Carmella Gentile reported that balloons released at last year’s event were found in Mt. Alto, Pa.

Parliamentarian Vince Talarico read amendments to by-laws which were approved. They included granting honorary membership to members 90 and older and changing guidelines for accepting membership applications.

Cashioli gave candy bars to people with May birthdays. President Jane Antonucci announced the June 5 meeting will be a Hawaiian luau with the menu featuring a roasted pig with all the trimmings.

Doby Piergallini announced winners of the club’s memorial scholarships will be awarded at the July 10 meeting. The winners are: Jack Marx, Steubenville High School, to attend Franciscan University of Steubenville; Gabriella Capaldi, Catholic Central High School, to attend Bethany College; Anthony DeFallo, CCHS, to attend Franciscan; Lexi Biasi from Steubenville High School, to attend Kent State University; and Virginia Olszewski, CCHS, to attend KSU.

At the April meeting, Fabbro, vice president of the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival, announced the 2017 honoree will be former state Sen. Lou Gentile. The festival runs from July 21-23. The honoree dinner is July 19 at the McClure Hotel in Wheeling. For information, call (304) 233-1090. Fabbro also announced that Balzano is the newest board member. Lucia Scaffidi is the other board member from Jefferson County.

Entertainment for the April meeting was provided by the Striplight Theater, while the May meeting was John Patrick Heiserman. Winners at the April meeting were Cashioli, Mary Ann Patrizio, Sandi Santicola, Joyce Cammilletti and Ray Piergallini. Winners at the May meeting were Theresa Coppa, Dominick Coppa and Cashioli.
