The Weirton Woman’s Club recognized the Pearl S. Buck essay winners, including first-place winner Gabrielle Mazzone, center, top, of Madonna High School and second-place winner Chloe Courtney, center, bottom, of Weir High School. Seth Feierman of Weir won third place. They received their awards from Barbara Raynolds, the Pearl S. Buck chair, left, and club President Diana Durst. Buck, who was born in West Virginia, was the daughter of missionaries and spent much of her childhood in China. She won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel “The Good Earth,” which was set in China, as was many of her works. — Contributed
