Hancock County Museum to hold open house today

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Museum will hold an open house from noon to 5 p.m. today at the facility located at 1008 Ridge Ave.

On display are several artifacts donated to the museum’s safe keeping by the community. Some of those documents include: a Revolutionary War document ordering the “Commission” of a local soldier; several items including French-made binoculars on loan from the Jim Powell family; a World War I uniform worn by a tank driver, including a Stetson hat, donated by the Evans family of Kings Creek; a World War II savings bond featuring Disney characters donated by Bob McNeil; full Marine dress blues worn by Pfc. Madden of Weirton; an album displaying a Korean War photo and Korean currency from Tom Powers; an album dedicated to “Killed in Action” GIs; a nurse’s cape used during WWI and WWII donated by Marla Simmons of New Cumberland; and uniforms and field gear from the Support Iraqi Freedom conflict.

There are many more items that tell stories of residents involvement with these conflicts, and locals are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about Hancock County history.
