Hancock County Federation

of Democratic Women meet

WEIRTON — The Hancock County Federation of Democratic Women met July 17 at Mario’s Restaurant with President Kathy Link presiding.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Treasurer Cindy Jones. who died in June.

Reports were given by Secretary Teresa McCombs and Debbie Caine, interim treasurer, who later in the meeting was appointed to serve as treasurer.

It was noted that the chicken blast picnic planned for Aug. 9 at the Serbian picnic grounds had been canceled.

The question for the scholarship will be discussed at the August meeting, it was decided. The group voted to insert on the application under “program eligibility” that the applicant “must be registered to vote as a Democrat or plan to register as a Democrat when she reaches legal age.”

Applications for the scholarship will be submitted to the guidance counselors at the schools in September. The deadline to submit them is March 30, 2018.

Link reminded the group of the annual meeting set for Sept. 15-17 at the Fairfield Inn and Suites at the Highlands in Triadelphia. The last day for hotel reservations is Aug. 24, and the last day to make the annual meeting reservations is Aug. 30. The registration fee for the annual meeting is $75.

The yard sale at Joe’s Lawn Mower Shop in September or October was discussed with proceeds to benefit the scholarship fund.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 21 at Giovanni’s Family Restaurant, Pennsylvania Avenue, Weirton, with dinner at 5 p.m. and the business meeting to follow at 6 p.m.

The Federation welcomes new members. All Democratic women residing in Hancock County are invited to attend and join the group at Giovanni’s Family Restaurant. Annual dues are $5.

Hancock County Humane Foundation seeks volunteers

NEW MANCHESTER — The Hancock County Humane Foundation is seeking volunteers.

Anyone interested in getting involved is encouraged to gather Aug. 27 at Spicy Gringo’s. 206 American Way, Weirton, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Help is need with the cat trap-neuter-return program and clinics throughout the Tri-State Area.

Toronto American Legion

hosting fish fry, band Friday

TORONTO — The Toronto American Legion Post 86, located at 415 Market St., will host a fish fry from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Deliveries will be available for a minimum $15 in orders.

The Buffington Brothers Band will perform at the Legion post from 8:30 p.m. until midnight Friday. The performance is open to the public. For information, call (740) 537-9317.

Old construction, mining

equipment show scheduled

NEW ATHENS — The 14th-annual Old Construction and Mining Equipment Show will be held Sept. 9 and 10 at the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park grounds located at 43672 Stumptown Road in New Athens, on Ohio 519 between U.S. 22 and New Athens.

The show includes operating and static displays of construction equipment, mining equipment, crawlers, trucks, models, history displays and more.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10. Admission is $3. Food available will include bison burgers and southern style barbecue food.
