Knights of Columbus 472

to hold steak fry Thursday

WINTERSVILLE — The Knights of Columbus Council No. 472 will hold its annual steak fry from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the council home on Two Ridge Road.

The menu will include steak, baked potato, green beans, salad and Italian bread. Desserts will be available. The cost is $15 per person.

The steak fry is open to council members and their families, and guests are welcome.

Reservations aren’t necessary, but those coming who wish to bring guests to fill a table should contact Don Hall at (740) 381-7662.

Refreshments will also be available in the social room at minimal prices.

Weirton Salvation Army

to host dance Friday

WEIRTON — The Weirton Salvation Army will hold its monthly benefit dance Friday at 796 Cove Road.

The Eldurays Classic Oldies dance band will perform from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission donation is $5 per person. For information, call (304) 748-4310.

St. Joseph the Worker School

to hold first Oktoberfest

WEIRTON — St. Joseph the Worker School, 151 Michael Way, Weirton, will host its first Oktoberfest from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 7.

The festivities will include local vendors; a meet the team for fall sports at 4 p.m.; and games and rides for children from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will be food, games and music.

Advance tickets are $20 — $25 at the door — and include a 26-ounce engraved stein including an over-21 wristband, 26-ounce fill-ups for beer for the price of regular 12-ounce plastic cups and entry into a special Oktoberfest drawing. A flyer notes $5 for over-21 wristband is needed to purchase alcohol.

Alpha Tau Chapter members

celebrate special recognition

NEW CUMBERLAND — The sisters of the WV Alpha Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Society of Women Educators held their annual kickoff meeting Sept. 12 at Swaney Memorial Library in New Cumberland.

President Velda Icard presided at the meeting attended by 18 members. “Don’t Quit,” the thought of the day, was shared by Amanda Fisher.

Reports were given by Secretary Toni Hinerman; Corresponding Secretary Pat Long; and Treasurer Fran Jones.

Immediate Past President Jeanne Barrett discussed new member programs and recruitment opportunities.

The chapter celebrated being recognized as a Six Pearl Chapter for the 2016-17 year.

Donna Bohach presented new bylaw and bylaw changes for the upcoming year.

Susan Gracie and Rita Schmitt shared fraternity education.

After the meeting, refreshments were provided by hostesses Ginger Robinson, Debbie Chuerella and Diane Bowers

Quarter auction Oct. 7 in Stratton to benefit ACS

STRATTON — Steppin’ for Sisters, one of the teams raising money for the American Cancer Society through the 2018 Steubenville Area Relay for Life, will hold a fundraiser quarter auction Oct. 7 at the Stratton Municipal Building.

Doors open at 1 p.m., and the auction starts at 2 p.m. Admission is $5, which includes one paddle. Additional paddles are available for $2. There will be a concession stand.

All proceeds benefit the ACS.

River’s Edge Garden Club

members hold annual picnic

TORONTO — River’s Edge Garden Club members held their annual covered-dish club picnic Sept. 21 at the home of Beth Cooper.

There were 12 members attending. Welcomed were new member Sharon Vescovi and guest Linda Winstel.

A brief business meeting was conducted by President Mary Bilchak. Program topics were discussed, and members decided what month they would hold meetings at their homes. A discussion also was held on a new slate of officers for the next two years.

The next meeting, Oct. 12, will be cleanup night for fall at Newburg Landing, followed by a meeting at the home of Michelle Jenkins.

Brilliant Lions Club to have food stand at haunted house

BRILLIANT — Ralph Nickoson, Brilliant Lions Club president, reported on the community picnic held recently with 36 members and five guests attending.

A collection was taken for hurricane victims, with Pastor Marc Tintsman in charge.

Kevin Higgins and Esther McCoy are working on a Boatsies Boxes, a project that involves sending filled Christmas stockings to military personnel.

Sean Norman, who operates the Brilliant Haunted House throughout the Halloween season, granted permission to the club to hold a pulled pork sandwich and potato chip food stand there on Oct. 7, beginning at 6 p.m.

Lions T-shirts are expected to be available at the Oct. 5 meeting with payment accepted then.

The club’s Christmas dinner was set for Dec. 7, with Ron Retzer and Trio offering the entertainment. It will be held at the Brilliant Christian Church. Nickoson encouraged members to be thinking of a deserving member for the Lion of the Year award that is presented at the Christmas event.

Drawing winners were Ron Branfass, Jack Noble and Tom Connell.

An ongoing 50/50 fundraiser project is ongoing.

Italian-American Cultural Club

plans Festa del for Vino Nov. 3

WINTERSVILLE — The Italian-American Cultural Club is planning its fall Festa del Vino on Nov. 3 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.

The fundraiser is open to the public.

Event Chairman Todd Piergallini said the event will be highlighting the Northern, Central and Southern areas of Italy. Along with the wine tasting, the evening will include Italian food, desserts, door prizes, Italian auctions and a silent auction.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person, and reservations are not needed. Tickets will be sold in advance or may be purchased at the door.

The event raises funds for senior scholarships that will be presented in 2018. The IACC awards five $1,000 scholarships per year.

Sponsors for the event are needed as well as auction items. Members are asked to bring to the meeting donated Italian items and wines for door prizes.

The September meeting was brought to order by Jane Antonucci presided at the September meeting.

On behalf of the nominating committee, Piergallini said the club needs a president, vice president and chaplain, as those terms are ending this year.

September birthdays were celebrated. The entertainment for the evening was Chris Denam, a Neil Diamond tribute act. There will be ball room dancing at the October meeting.

Winners for the evening were Doug Filippi, Josephine Porco and Mary Conroy.

Tennis teams planning

car wash for Sunday

CHESTER — Oak Glen High School’s tennis teams will be holding a car wash from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Water World Car Wash on Carolina Avenue, Chester. There also will be a sale of baked goods and beverages.
