Guiding Lights awards

banquet Oct. 28 at Calvary

STEUBENVILLE — The 2017 Community Guiding Light awards banquet, hosted by Calvary Community Missionary Baptist Church, will be held Oct. 28 at the YWCA of Steubenville, 320 N. Fourth St., beginning at 2 p.m.

“Seven individuals from the Ohio Valley will be honored for going above and beyond in the service they have provided to the community as exemplars of Matthew 5:16, which says ‘Let your light so shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven,'” a spokesperson noted.

Honorees include Pastor Bobbyjon Bauman, youth advocate; Rose Slaughter, educational outreach; Delores Wiggins, civil rights; Bill “B.J.” Murray, small business; Keith Murdock, Trinity Health System director of community relations and development; Pastor James Foglio, pastoral support; and Sophie Spencer, social service outreach.

Bishop Jermaine Moore, pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church Steubenville, will served as toastmaster, and the Rev. Melvin Rippy, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Wheeling, will be the keynote speaker.

orders for nutrolls

MINGO JUNCTION — St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Mingo Junction is taking orders for nutrolls.

Myrtle McHendry class

celebrates 95th anniversary

WEIRTON — The Myrtle McHendry class of Cove Presbyterian Church in Weirton met Oct. 3 in the fellowship hall in celebration of its 95th anniversary with a catered dinner attended by 12 members.

Mums used as centerpieces were to be placed in the sanctuary, then given to shut-ins.

President Peggy Baldt opened the meeting with prayer. Reports were given by Suellen Lewis, secretary, and Diana Durst, treasurer.

Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged. Eleanor Cline reported on cards being sent to ill members of the congregation.

The group will be filling large Christmas stockings for children for distribution by the Salvation Army.

A presentation was given by Susan Baldt, a certified thermographer, on a procedure used along with mammograms to detect breast cancer.

Point Pleasant Ladies

Aide holds meeting

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Point Pleasant Ladies Aide met Oct. 11 at the Point Pleasant United Methodist Church in New Cumberland with President Carolyn Allison presiding.

Marian Caine and Nancy Wright led in singing, and Caine offered the blessing.

Hostesses Joyce Beatty, Betty Glenn, Kathleen McDonald and Nancy Wright decorated the tables to an autumn theme and served refreshments.

Allison read the devotion “Friendship Recipe.”

Reports were given by Secretary Nancy Conkle, including correspondence from Swaney Library identifying books that were donated in memory of member Jeanne Gibson.

Ella Louise Herron was given a sewing-themed bag as a prize for estimating the closest number of buttons that were displayed in a jar.

A report on the River Fest was given.

Members voted to give Allison Elementary and Oak Glen Middle School a donation to buy necessary items for the students.

Joys and concerns were shared, and prayer offered by Judy Tate.

After the meeting, each member drew a picture and painted a quilt square that will be compiled to make a wall-hang quilt.

Yarn Ministry meets

Thursday at Toronto church

TORONTO — The Yarn Ministry, which welcomes new members who are interested in yarn crafting, will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Toronto, located at 116 N. Third St.

The group meets every other Thursday at 10 a.m. Participants share patterns, learn new crocheting and knitting techniques and make items, for example, for the Trinity Birthing Center.

“We enjoy giving handmade items to celebrate the joys of life as well as offering support to others,” a spokesperson noted.

The last meeting included a presentation by Mindy Jones, who explained the American Cancer Society program “Look Good, Feel Better.” The program through the Tony Teramana Cancer Center helps patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. The Yarn Ministry assists by making hats.

Sveta Petka Kolo plans

for Slava, Christmas party

STEUBENVILLE — The Sveta Petka Kolo of Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church of Steubenville held its monthly meeting on Oct. 5 at Eat’n Park in Steubenville.

Plans were made for Slava on Oct. 29, a day to remember and pray for past and present members. A lunch will follow the service. The group also made plans for its Christmas party to be held Dec. 10.

The monthly charity donation will benefit hurricane victims in Florida and Texas.

The next meeting will be held Nov. 2 at Eat’n Park.

Final ‘Paint and Float’

Nov. 5 at Weirton church

WEIRTON — First United Methodist Church, located at the corner of West Street and Lee Avenue, Weirton, will be holding its last “Paint and Float” craft class for the year on Nov. 5, beginning at noon.

A choice of three winter crafts — a Christmas tree, elf or winter mitten — will be offered as part of the RSVP, prepay class. Limited seating is available. All payments are due by Oct. 28.

Ham and pierogie dinner

Oct. 29 in Burgettstown

BURGETTSTOWN — Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Christian Mothers will hold their annual ham and pierogie dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at McCashion Hall, located at 1109 Main St.

‘Trunk or treat’ Oct. 29

at Paris Presbyterian Church

PARIS — Paris Presbyterian Church at 127 Steubenville Pike will hold “trunk or treat” from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 29.

The free event open to families includes games, food, candy and prizes and fun for all. There will be a costume contest with prizes for the winners.

Fall family festival Oct. 28 at Weirton Heights Memorial

WEIRTON — Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, 121 Ivy St., will hold its annual fall family festival from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 28 in the church fellowship hall.

The free event is for children and their families and will include games and prizes for adults as well as children. A meal, Christ-centered message, games, cake walk and candy gathering will be part of the festivities.

WINTERSVILLE — Wintersville Church of the Nazarene is hosting a free fall fun fest from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 28. All children ages 3 to 12 are invited to enjoy games, food and prizes. The church is located at 377 Longvue Drive, Wintersville.

Revival services planned

at Plum Run Churches

RAYLAND — Plum Run Churches of Christ in Christian Union, located at 200 twp. Road 151, Rayland, will host revival services featuring the Rev. Leroy Wion from Sunday through Wednesday.

The services begin at 7 p.m.

Fall bazaar, dinner at

Colliers UMC Oct. 28

COLLIERS — Colliers United Methodist Church is celebrating fall with its annual fall bazaar and turkey dinner on Oct. 28.

The bazaar will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A variety of soups and sandwiches, including hot dogs and pulled pork, will be available from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Patrons can dine in or get take-out.

Dinner will be served from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and feature turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls, desserts and drinks. The dinner cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 7-12 and free for children 6 and younger. Carry-outs will be available.
