Farm lease workshop to be

held Feb. 13 at Jefferson JVS

STEUBENVILLE — Ohio State University Extension is hosting a farm lease workshop from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School in Bloomingdale.

“This class is a great opportunity to learn more about the types of leases for landowners and tenants — whether you work with crop, pasture or hunting leases on your farm,” noted Erika Lyon, OSU Extension educator.

Many farm leases are in the form of verbal agreements, according to Lyon. “Leases should always be written to avoid conflicts, even if there is currently a good relationship between the landowner and tenant. Determining what to charge for leases will depend on a variety of factors, from buildings to fence to land productivity,” she said. “Hunting also can be written into a lease, which may include a schedule for when hunting is permitted on the property.”

The class will address farm-leasing options and considerations for each type of lease, the legal aspects of property leases and where to find template leases for your operation.

The cost to participate in the workshop is $15, and pre-registration is required. A light dinner will be provided. Register by contacting the OSU Extension office at (740) 264-2212 or send an e-mail to lyon.194@osu.edu. Questions about farm leases can be directed to Lyon at (740) 264-2212, extension 203.

OSU Extension will provide accommodations to handicapped persons needing assistance to participate in Extension programs. For those who require accommodations to attend programs or access information, contact the Jefferson County Extension Office at (740) 264-2212.
